The one thing I would say is that I have two 100% wool utility blankets of my grannies and despite the fact that they're 60+ years old I STILL use them on top of the duvet's every winter (this removes the itch issues!) - a good wool blanket will last several lifetimes!

I definitely agree on spare footwear for all situations - I always keep decent walking boots/shoes in the car (underneath the passenger seat taking up no room at all) in case I need to walk anywhere when wearing daft shoes/heels, even just a breakdown situation can become a real difficulty if you do...
