I often thought of sending a letter (anonymously) to my neighbours along these lines but wasn't sure if it wasn't just a bit creepy or fanatical, I think I may weel just do it now.

I couldn't prove it but I honestly believe that if your neighbours are not a threat that would be half the battle won in a real SHTF situation.

Your neighbours might not be a threat if they prep but might well be if they don't. No matter how well you think you know someone you might be surprised how they behave when their survival is at stake. Prepping seems like a very tricky subject to bring up without immediately giving the game away that you might be the local food store in a SHTF situation.

I like Ham's letter idea  and if anything bad does happen I do not believe the die off of the so called "sheeple" will be as severe or quick as some of us often feel, they may have been ignoring the possible downfall of the way of life we enjoy, that does not make them entirely helpless, there are a multitude of skilled people out there who will not go down without a fight, that could be bad for us, it could be good for us, we have to be prepared to deal with whatever happens as apposed to whatever we think in our "wisdom" is going to be the case, Forrest Gump was right, you never do know what you're gonna get....only it's rarely chocolate ;)
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

By all means spread the word just don't call it prepping. I was emptying the car out after a accident a little while ago and was asked why I had a sleeping bag in the car, did I go camping! my reply was that I work 30 miles from home and it was in case I got stuck in a traffic or snow(god only knows what they would have said if they had seen inside my get home bag). All my family and friends know that I have candles and a small camping stove in case of a power cut ( we grew up in the 70s) and I encourage them to have something like this.
As redskies say's you can have interesting conversation about what is going on in the news now days with out letting on that you are a prepper.

This is the approach I take too - locate the discussion in real-world events "Look at all those poor people who had to get out of their house in Buncefield - I bet they wished they had a BOB" "Look at that power-cut in south London - 500,000 people affected - bet they wish they had a few candles and some way of making a cup of tea".

Talking about global economic collapse, peak oil, pandemic, etc. just tends to make people glaze over, in my experience. And of course you can say that you have a few extra tins, but not that you've got 3 months' worth of food for the family.

I personally wouldn't be too pushy with the idea of prepping for shtf. People will likely reject what you have to say and assume you are mad so they can sleep better. Instead i'd try and talk more about personal shtf possibilities which happen to people on a day to day basis. With abit of luck they will then look into it on their own and start considering more serious things that can go wrong. theres a great prepper on youtube who talks about converting people to prepping https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-3UM7TcLeA well worth a watch!
