This is a superb little book by Michel Daniek. In it he describes which batteries to use, and how to get to get the best out of each type. There is all the information you need regarding formulas and making sense of power drain. He even shows how to make a simple device for aligning your panels to follow the sun through the day.
More importantly, he gives some great ideas how to convert ordinary everyday power tools over to 12Volt use, and the book is written in a humorous and easy to read style.
There are many books out there that cover this subject, but this is the one I'd keep if I had to choose one.
ISBN 978-1-85623-072-8 and it's around £12.95 for 123 pages of good information.
Another good book but very "Dry" in writing style and much more "Techy" is "Independent Energy Guide - Electrical power for home, boat and Rv" by Kevin Jeffrey. This is an American book, highly comprehensive, but not as fun to read.
Very, very good information though.
ISBN 0-9644112-0-2 Not even sure if it's still in print, but you ought to be able to get a copy via ABE Books.

Yeah, yeah, get past the hippy balderdash and look at practical stuff.
Easy to read, easy to understand. That is the crux of the matter.
