Caches

Post by Carrot Cruncher »

Ok, Caches may not be everyones cup of tea but they could also be invaluable if you had to bug out without your kit or it was lost or stolen.

I thought it might be a good exersize to pool our thoughts and come up with some basics that could be included in a small cache. The requirements of the cache (for this exersize at least) is that it should be able to stand alone if you have no kit with you. Also, to try and limit it a bit, we could use a section of drainpipe (sealed at each end) as the container to bury it in, i have seen similar projects using sections of pipe on various survival/prepping blogs etc and they seem to work fine.

Right, so the size of the drainpipe is approx' 1meter length x 10cm diameter so all the kit need to fit in with those dimensions. Smallish, but easy to bury/hide.

Post any thoughts on what we might think we should put in the cache...but be specific about what item you mean. A hex stove might fit in the pipe but a gas stove might not.

It would be good to get a basic list which can then be added to by us to meet our own specific needs. Also take cost into account, most of us cant afford to bury £100's worth of kit away.

Just a thought, can you get mess tins to fit in a pipe that small. If not, is there an alternative ?

Would you need a full first aid kit ? Could you not cut that down a bit ?
Would a tin of baked beans do as a mess tin ? Eat the beans then keep the tin ?

Good idea about the beans and breaking down the first aid kit, maybe we need to discuss the essentials of the FAK we would need.

Also probably worth packing a compass and map of the local area inside as well, along with a couple of pencils etc

What about a lightweight Tarp, they pack down pretty small and would sort the shelter side of things

What I can think of -- scissors, asprins, anti-histamines, brandy, suture kit, powerful antibiotics, Immodium.
