Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 6.
My order came yesterday and I was surprised at how much things had gone up. Next week think it will be Aldi or Lidl for a change.

I find Aldi cheaper for pasta and oil than Costco Lil, Costco is great for somethings but its worth doing a bit of research as somethings aren't any cheaper unless you buy them in mahoosive quantities. Then you have to decant into wee quantities, depends what it is right enough. Aldi is great for tuna too off the top of my head, don't know if its one of your things.diamond lil wrote: ↑Mon Jan 28, 2019 5:21 pm My order came yesterday and I was surprised at how much things had gone up. That decanting lark is a right faff - I bought a 5kg plastic "sack" of sugar last year, brilliant per kilo price. But lifting it to pour with precision into a smaller jar was appalling I'm back to buying in kilos now, and much less in any case.

I like smaller packs. No extra work and ready to store. Time is money, and effort.

We buy our veg oil in 25 litre containers. It's a bugger to decant early on but with a funnel and some persistence it eventually gets into the 1 litre bottles.

For a few practical reasons I prefer smaller containers, a 'puncture' for one but also for ease of use. Its all relative though I guess, if you're feeding 20 then small containers might be a ballache. I do find some of the budget end providers just as cheap as Costco (don't know about other wholesaler type places) but in smaller packets.Again, if you're feeding 20 the catering tins would work out cheaper but if you're only feeding a family you'd need to eat a LOT of baked beans over a short period of time to make it worth your while if you crack a catering tin.

I just did a raid on Sainsbury and Morrisons. I have more jars of Kenco smooth than both of them put together Mind you, they didn't have much before I got there. I had to reach up to the 'staff only' out of reach shelf and got the tray still shrink wrapped.diamond lil wrote: ↑Mon Jan 28, 2019 5:21 pm My order came yesterday and I was surprised at how much things had gone up. There's DEFINITELY some Brexit Prepping going on. Two big stores and not one tin of economy own brand plum tomatoes in either of then. Bought the last tray of Morrisons saver Chopped plum tomatoes and half of their 35p regular range. But read it again. They had NO inexpensive Tinned Plum tomatoes except the chopped ones. A great big empty space littered with a few dented tins. Both Sainsburys and Morrisons! Lots of other sparsely stocked shelves.
Also, I scanned the Sainsbury prices again. They are definitely increasing massively across the board.
Graceful Degradation! Prepping's objective summed up in two words. Turning Disaster into Mild Inconvenience by the power of fore-thought

Oh god Deepsy - tuna noooo but def agree re Costco not being cheaper, just handier for a bulk buy and then you can forget about whatever it is for a few months. I like their meat though, and I got 12 packs of bacon today.
