Twig Stove

I'm looking to invest in a small, light camping stove that will go off of twigs and leaves. I was looking at the Solo Stove Lite or a Kelly Kettle set (link below for anyone who's interested) but am open to other recommendations. I'm not looking for the cheapest option, necessarily, I want something quality.

The Kelly kettle burns very differently to a wood gas stove and will probably get too hot and not sustain a decent flame to cook on

I've got one of those pot stands that fits into the top of a kelly kettle. It'll cook food really quick but it's very unstable and it'll topple over a good 50% of the time. I love my Kelly and its been on innumerable fishing trips with me to make a brew but I wouldn't choose it to cook food, you can, but definitely not first choice.

Do you want something portable for bug-out? If so, I would forget the Kelly kettle. Solo stove light sounds better. I have a cheaper copy, bit like the Lixada one Andy mentioned, cost £22. Is steel.

Still a bit bulky and heavy. You need a pot and maybe a handle. Plus a mug and plate or bowl. Knife fork and spoon. It all adds up.

For bugout however I go with two or three other options.

Primary for 2-3 day bugout I go with gas:
1.1 litre titanium pot with lid, wire handle, hanging loop, and separately bought titanium hanging chain. The chain has a plate at the top with 3 holes to make a tripod. This means you can cook over an open fire if the gas runs out (backup 1). My pot is my mug, plate and bowl. I have a plastic spork which is everything else. For a short bugout, gas is quick, easy, efficient. Inside the pot is a small camping gas canister and stove (Soto Windmaster). Additional is plastic stabaliser.

Backup 2 for longer bugout is a folding titanium twig stove. Very light and compact, but not a gasifier.

Additionally I have the following, for bug-in or maybe bug-out with others.
Cheap gas stove and canisters
Mini Trangia (meths)
Trangia with gas burner. This can be used with any camping gas canister or the Mini Trangia meths burner.
Steel folding twig stove.

Meths is easier to find than twigs, but not so easy to use as gas. Gas is the most efficient but it will run out eventually.

There is no type of stove that uses all forms including twigs.

As mentioned, my Trangia can use meths and gas.

Also, you can buy multifuel stoves. These are what climbers use. They are quite expensive, and you have to know what you are doing. They cannot use twigs. They can use gas and meths.

Finally, there are solid fuels stoves. I have one, but I don't rate them. They are smelly and slow.

Couple of other related things.

I made a pot cosy out of aluminium backed bubble wrap and gaffa tape for haybox type cooking for pasta. I got it from Backpacking Light, but they have closed. The pot is packed in the cosy so it takes little room. I kept the offcut to use as a windshield.

You need a wind shield of some sort for most forms of cooking out doors. I don't have anything else for bugout. I do have a folding one, but I took it out to save weight.

I dunno why I wrote gas and meths. These can burn all sorts. Review for this one says it prefers clean petrol to garage. They can burn 'liquid gas' which I assume is white gas, but note this is a liquid sold by companies like MSR, not canister gas. There are some multifuel stoves that can use gas canisters eg MSR Whisperlite Universal, Soto StormBreaker, and Optimus Polaris Optifuel. It is confusing because the word 'gas' can mean canisters or liquid. Look for a pic of a canister.

MSR say Always look for MSR White Gas—the highest quality fuel available. Other common white gas brands include Coleman Crown and CampLite. Unleaded auto gas may be used in your stove. However additives will lead to rapid clogging making frequent fuel line cleanings necessary. Do not use leaded fuels!.

They can also burn diesel and kerosene (parrafin). Some other similar types say they burn LP or LPG gas and jet fuel or aviation fuel.

The only fuel MSR sell is liquid white gas and canisters.
