I spied the Japanese post and it got me thinking of my old stomping ground in New Zealand which takes prepping to a whole new level. I’ve linked the initial website, the get ready page and how to prep your home, it also has schools and workplaces on it. There’s plans and PDF files to download if that’s your thing. Of course little ole Godzone has to think more seriously about preparing as it has its fair share of earthquakes, tsunami warnings and White Island blowing up every so often but there might be stuff in there to think about for us up here.
They always used to say the army was the first to go in to a disaster area, then the Sally Army goes at the back of them to feed the army! Daft wee snippet but it’s something I remember.

Sorry, but I found it a bit rubbish, compared to EU sites or even this forum.Kiwififer wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2024 11:06 pm https://www.civildefence.govt.nz/get-ready

Took me a while to find a page that explained anything about what 'three days of food' might comprise of.
This is it... https://getready.govt.nz/prepared/household/supplies
Links seemed to take me round and round barely populated pages.
There seemed to be more 'What to do after' type pages than 'how to prep for' pages.

Dear me well, seasons greetings to both of you.
Actually, I found it pretty good, and the supplies thing seemed fairly well placed. And I loved this page https://getready.govt.nz/ sensible earthquake advice including disabled people, and the cartoon of the emergency alert going off, with the mid-air dog trying to catch the frisbee is priceless Love that dog.

Nah, not at all.
I find it fascinating how other countries get their citizens prepare their populations for disasters. The first time I’ve ever come across anything like this was when I lived down there and I asked what the massive bolted chest was in the back cupboard at work and they replied ‘everything we need to get staff and service users through until the army turns up’.
Could you imagine the UK government making that happen?

Re: New Zealand Civil Defence website
What I've seen of UK Government Preparedness websites looked like some project given to an intern or work experience participant. I can't see UK Gov being so upfront about our risks. I think we need some sorts of voluntary civic service schemes. I won't say National Service because that has connotations.
With hindsight, I apologise for any offence from my earlier criticism of the NZ site. It's just not what I expect to see in a form I expect to see it, based on what else is out there.

Like all things it is a starting point.
Much like the 5 a day or 10,000 steps which seem attainable to most but are under actual requirements.
Those that want to help themselves start with the minimum and build apon that when time and money allow.
Happy Prepping.

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Re: New Zealand Civil Defence website
I think the one big difference is that NZ has actually experienced huge upheavals and SHTF episodes in ghe relatively recent past, and we haven't. All the earthquakes and the ground was melting from under them
Re: New Zealand Civil Defence website
In the last few years…
White Island blew up.
Christchurch was flattened.
Forest fires every year although not on the scale of Greece or Australia.
Tsunami warnings a few times a year when there’s an offshore earthquake like the one that his Samoa a few years back.
Mt Ruapehu - an active volcano, the lake at the top burst in 2007 causing mud slides that could have caused damage to a few towns.
And so on. There’s even a dormant volcano about a mile off the beach in Auckland as well as two calderas at Taupo and Rotarua in the north island and all three are overdue an eruption of some sort.
As I said, I’m interested in how other countries prep as you can learn things off them. I would go as far as saying most folk down there are at least aware that they need to prep even if they don’t do it, it’s actually fairly normal.
