I have something similar to this buried already.

I used a underbed storage box, wrapped in plastic and gaffer tape.
It all comes to less than £100, could be £50 without the flash knifes and chainsaws etc.

It includes (this is from memory)

TWO MAN TENT £6 - clearance bargins
400 gsm Regatta Sleeping Bag £5 clearance bargins
Loads of Rope and washing line type cord. £5 home bargins
Lots of Snare wire £2 home bargins (garden wire)
Hacksaw and blades (not ideal for wood i know but took up very little space) £6 home bargins
Fishing stuff in fishing stick. £5 poundshop
Long Johns (old) £old
Hat (old) £old
Underpants (old) Stop laughing at the back!!! £phew
New fleece jumper £4 TheHut.com
Fire Steel ad lighter £10 Amazon
Pack of playing cards £1
Collapsable large bowel. £2 Tesco
3 tarps. £3 Tesco
Swiss Army Knife £3 Amazon
Pocket Chainsaw £12 Amazon
Laplander Saw £12 Amazon
Mora Clipper Knife £13 Amazon

If you lot are going to put stuff in a tiny pipe how are you going to find it? Trust me.. time does funny things to memory when returning to places in different seasons and condtions.

i_am_jim wrote:how do you protect your cache from the effects of freezing over winter, surely this will affect what you can/cannot stash?. as any bottles of liquids or cans would burst and ruin the rest of the cache. is this correct? any ideas?.
Radios will probs be killed by extreme low temps and i woudnt put any liquids in it either for the reasons you mention. Maybe some antiseptic creme but wrapped that well

:D Relying on memory certainly wouldn't worrk for me, but there are plenty of methods, low and high tech, that can be used

Interesting thought, but there are ways and means of placing smaller items in places easy to find, and it doesn't need to be miles away in a dark and distant wood, it can be under your own shed, or allotment, under a culvert, in a ditch, also "hidden in plain sight" is a good one ;)

I guess if you are putting a hundred quids worth of gear in a hole you are happy to lose it all?

Over the years iv had some things happen you wouldnt beleive.

Iv had a 200 year old oak blow down and cover my cache and iv also had Wasps build a nest right on top of it.

Iv had ones marked out inbetween trees and then one of the trees have died and snapped then almost disappeared so i couldnt find the "inbetween" were it was buried.

God can have a terrible sense of humour, trust me.

In these days id take a snap on my Camera phone. To anyone else its just a tree in some woods but to you it will mean the EXACT TREE

**edit but DONT rely on the photo! iv chucked/lost phones with the treasure map on before and you brain refuses to remember cos "you have a photo dont you"

That's what google earth and an OS map combined with a GPS unit comes in, and with a good set of electronic maps such as memory map you can copy and paste and print all kinds of "treasure maps" and save them to USB memory sticks and cdroms :geek:

I try not to rely on electronics too much as my main theory is a solar flare will hit earth taking out every electronic gadget on the planet in seconds.

We had one hit in the late 1800's and it wiped out the telecomunication system we had JUST started to build, another is well overdue.

You haven't been reading the excellent posts on solar flares and EMPs then, ;)

You could also print off the maps and stash those as well, after all only you would know which ones are the real ones and what the symbols are you have used.

A good thing to watch is a couple of the true stories from WWII, The Colditz story and Stallag Luft three, The Great Escape, also "Moonless night" by Bertram A James, nice bloke, met him a few times, Wife went to his funeral a few years back.

Anyway, they "stashed" kit in the Castle and in the camp that has been found in recent years. They found it because the old boys remembered where they had put it. 60 years on.

Plenty of plsaces to stash and recall later without electronics in the future, just a simple GR and a tape measure.

NEXT!

Reading this thread has brought on some interesting questions, I think the contents of a cache will be personal based on what you are prepping for and what you have available. My biggest concern with regard to this is what happens if it is found.

Like has been mentioned

My concerns also include the legality of where you place the cache. In my head, some of the best places are places you'll want to get to. If my street is evacuated or blown up then a cache in my back garden is pretty useless. Also, what if I move house? So I start thinking about 'public' ground... It needs to be somewhere recognisable and least likely to become a problem for access... Right up until someone decides to build a new housing estate there. And then onto legallity... I dabble with Geocaching (using millions of dollars worth of military tech to find tupperware in the woods) so I know how easy it is to hide a cache. There is also an element of dropping caches onto private land or areas which might get you in trouble with the lawman for whatever reason.

I haven't yet found an answer to my head. It is still wondering.
