Looking for some advice from those preppers who commute in to London.

I've recently accepted a job starting next week based in central London, first big job for me really so need some advice on building a decent EDC kit that I can stick in a laptop bag/jacket. Most of my preps as of yet are biased towards my area which is semi-rural, so a lot of it won't be that beneficial.

Any help is much appreciated! :D

Slimslim - I've always worked in central London. I currently freelance so I'm at a few different places a week, but they are all in a similar area (almost always in that block between Tottenham Ct. Road and Great Portland St.).

I commute into London, and my EDC is geared towards getting home safely and in relative comfort.

Here is my current EDC (copy/pasted from my electronic inventory):

In black drawstring sack:

Maglite Solitaire (attached to keys)
Torch (LED Lenser + batteries)
Wind-up/squeezy torch
Snaplight - glow stick
Spork
Lighter + matches
P38 can opener
KFC wipes
550 Paracord 15’
Karibiners x 3 (1 large + 2 mini)
Emergency mylar blanket
FFP3 dust mask
Tablets (Paracetamol, Migraine, Anti-histamine, Ibuprofen, Antacid, Pro Plus caffeine)
Plasters
London A-Z
Radio + earphones
Hand warmer

In rucksack:

Sit mat
Hand sanitizer
First Defence anti-cold nasal spray

FOOD (wrapped in foil + plastic):
Mackerel fillets (BBE: OCT 2016)
6 x Oatcakes (BB 8/6/2012)
Nature Valley bar (BB 15/1/2013)

Just realised my oatcakes are out of date! Ha ha!

As I often swap bags, a good idea I think, is that I keep my EDC items in a drawstring mesh bag, so it's all together and I can just move it from one bag to another. If you always, always use the same bag then this won't be an issue.

Certainly, if you're working in London, DO expect everything to go to pot during the Olympics. I'll without a doubt be carrying my EDC during that period...

Well my basic EDC which I have secreted in my tardisian handbag which I Carry Every Day, be it to work, out for the night, shopping etc is as follows:

Basic first aid - (Gloves, dressings, antibac, tissues, paracetamol, antihistamine tabs and cream, a foil blanket.)
Multi-tool
Water
Phone (with torch function)
Matches
Pen & Paper
Energy sweets and mints
Sugar and salt saches
Cash

In my Car my EDV I have additional things like spare clothes - me and the kids, blanket, torch, more water, more and additional first aid stuff, biscuits, foot grips, waterproof and folding spade.

They are both basic but its an Every Day Carry so I don't want my total bug out stuff or camping stuff. This is just for an emergencey so I at least have a few days on those who are totally unprepared, ie if I get stuck in my car or the like.

My EDC is a Snugpak Response pak in both my car and the wife's as well as one in the Land Rover. The contents of each is basically the same:
BCB Crusader mess tin
Hexamine stove with tablets
A change of socks/t-shirt/undies for both of us tightly wrapped up and sealed.
A first aid kit
A fire kit (firesteel, water/wind proof matches, lighter, tinder dust, cotton wool, vaseline (and a load of vaseline-soaked cotton wool stuffed inside old 35mm film tubs!)
Mylar blankets x 2
Ponchos x 2 (small lightweight pvc disposable kind)
Duct tape (wrapped around an old credit card)

In addition, each car also has a small LED torch constantly charging in the lighter socket, a tarpualin (can't remember the size, but it's big enough to make a decent shelter for two) with appropriate paracord to secure it, and a box/bag of assorted dried meals and choccy bars which will soon be replaced with Seven Oceans ration packs. Proper, full-size ponchos and waterproof trousers. My cars have knives, but the wife's is blade free, but I'm working on that!

The Land Rover has a more comprehensive first aid kit, a Bacho Laplander, an axe and various bits 'n' bobs associated with off-roading that would come in handy in other arenas!

On my person, I have a BCB credit-card multi-tool in my ripper wallet along with needle/thread, safety pins and a couple of hand sanitiser sachets. On my Subaru keyring I have a Leatherman Squirt, which is pliers, an LED Lenser and a True Utility capsule with £20 in it. The Landy's keys have the same except the Leatherman is the Micra, which is scissors, as there are pliers in the tool kit you never leave home without in a Land Rover!

I'm sure I've forgotten something though..... ;)

Hey guys, I just put together my 1st EDC.

It is:

Iphone 4 (GPS + Torch)
Maglite Solitaire (attached to keys)
Keys
Wallet
Knife
Ipad 3 (if my work bag/cam bag)

EASY ACCESS (by this I mean stuff thats 'loose' in my bag)
Sunglasses
Torch (LED Lenser + batteries)
Pencil
Small Notepad
FFP3 dust mask
Hand warmer
Hand sanitizer
Lighter
MULTITOOL
Emergancy Poncho

TIGHT PACK (Stuff that ill nearly never need on a 'normal day' only in a SHTF sit - this is in a vacuum compression bag)

COMPASS
SAS Survival Guide BOOK
Eat for Free BOOK
Gloves
1L Water (Bottled)
Wind-up/squeezy torch
Glow stick x 3
Spork
Lighter
Matches
Pen x 2
P38 can opener
550 Paracord 15’
Karibiners x 3 (1 large + 2 mini)
Poly Bag
Button Compass
*2 MAPS OF MY AREA WHERE I LIVE AND WORK
PAIR SOCKS
Batteries
Fire Steel (+ Sealed cotton wool)
Razor blade
Whistle
Fishing kit
Wire
Water purification tablets
Wire Saw

First aid kit (in a air tight small square food storage box.)

Tablets (Paracetamol, Asprin, Anti-histamine, Ibuprofen, Antacid, Pro Plus caffeine, Imodium, Full Propranalol, clofrac, amitriptiline )
Alcohol wipes
Plasters
Condoms
Medical Gloves
Emergency mylar blanket
Quick Clot

FOOD (wrapped in foil + plastic):

Mackerel fillets
FEW SNACK BARS
Few Sweets

NOW my question is - its all fairly big, as in, the tight pack is fairly heavy, fits in my rucksack but not very well in my side bag/'man' bag I take to work - also has slim laptop in for work

Also my 1st aid kit and a poncho are separate - ideally i want to put all of it in as small a space I can.

Any tips for slimming down/intelligently pack stuff to take up as little room as poss?

If you have problems with weight / size look at the level of redundancy in your kit. Its ok having backups, but you have 5 torches/light sources there and 4 methods of starting a fire. How often has your lighter failed to work ? Yes stuff breaks occasionally, but tbh it's more likely to break if you ram it all in really tight because you have too much
Fewer, better quality items might be better than excessive backups in this case.
