What i have noticed

Post by 23pioneer »

I am by no means a EOTWAWKI Prepper, i prep for hard times, no electric (live on an island with 220 people on it) and perhaps an economic collapse, however what i have noticed recently is that more food stuffs come in throw away packaging (or what the makers call refil packaging) coffee in foil, i even saw gin in foil packaging in Tescos this week, so start saving your glass jars and bottles to re-use because in a few years time the majority of stuff will be sold in packaging that has no second use. and the best bit about this advice is that my non prepping wife pointed this out to me..

If i'm wrong someone correct me but there was something about not re using glass jars for jam making , you had to buy new ones , cant remember where , but granny makes jam with the only proviso that we return the jar for re use to her , anyone else seen that ??

We have done jam in used jars before now, also used them for pickle and pickled eggs, but best not to use pickle jars for jam

pickled jam....mmmm yummy :D

I don't see any problem in re-using jars as long as they are sterilised in boiling water. My mother has done it that this way, her mother has done it this way..... and I'm still here.

If you think about it glass milk bottles have been reused for years and still are.

The thing about jam jars is based on some EU law about food safety - but here is the WI advice on the subject : http://www.thewi.org.uk/media-centre/la ... f-jam-jars

Yep, glass milk bottles get about 10 trips out before they get turned into bricks

If the food is for your own consumption then there's no problem. I agree that as well as food/water stocks we should have a store of items like jam jars that we will be able to use.
I've heard of preppers storing rolls of fabric..... :D

I've been doing jams and pickles for some time as a way to safely distribute the fruit and veg the church is given at harvest time. We are no longer allowed to take it to homes and hospitals the way it used to happen. People in the village hand in bags of jars to me and I sterilize them with a hot wash and time in the oven. Nobody died yet.

With fabrics, I buy lots when it is cheap and use when needed. I can always run up some new curtains or make a new skirt at a tiny fraction of the price others pay for ready-made. This probably has to do with me being a natural born skinflint!
