Cat Food MRE?
Re: Cat Food MRE?
As a last resort yes cat food is a possibility, when feeding my own sometimes the meals smell wonderful!! - though like you have not tried them.
Though the commercial Whiskas, Felix, etc are barely 4% protein and there are huge amount of synthetic additives etc, so I limit those. If you would seriously consider I would recommend swedish cat food called Bozita - 90- 99% protein, no synthetic additives just vitamins - very dense and fulling (for the cat) and nutritious. Can be found on http://www.zooplus.co.uk
Short of that, try Look What We Found products, not quite MRE but their items last for about a year can be heated in a flameless and taste good

Re: Cat Food MRE?
Thank you for all of the suggestions, I guess the last thing that I want to do is eat my cats food But this has highlighted some cheap alternatives to the generally expensive MRE's. I would like to stay away from cooking or heating if possible and a lot of these are good suggestions

Very true! I have seen these around before but as part of a kit (with the meal). Good prices, something else to add to my list haha12mp82 wrote:You could get some flameless heaters though.

I'm not sure about the UK but in the states the FDA state that all dog/cat food has to be fit for human consumption. There's lots of alternatives though like the 'look what we found' range that's already been mentioned. You can even buy in bulk direct from them for a good discount.

1) So they don't have to write a whole new set of regulations for pet food, andForgeCorvus wrote:Why?Darktide wrote:I'm not sure about the UK but in the states the FDA state that all dog/cat food has to be fit for human consumption. ......
2) So your pets don't die
3) So you don't sue the manufacturers when tiddles eats unfit food.
For uk guidelines are:
"The material of animal origin used by the pet food industry comprises those parts of animals which are either deemed surplus to human consumption or are not normally consumed by people in the UK, and derived from animals inspected and passed as fit for human consumption prior to slaughter. Animal material of this nature, which is not intended for human consumption, is classified as 'animal by-products' under the EC Regulation on Animal By-Products for which Defra is responsible, and assigned the lowest risk rating. This rating requires that the material be free of any transmissible disease, which therefore excludes material from dying, diseased or disabled animals."

Still don't get it
Lots of things can be classed as unfit for humans and yet are perfectly edible ......... Come to think of it, there are things that aren't edible that are classed as fit (connective tissue anyone?)
I always thought the pet food industry was where the condemned meat and the scraps from meat packing plants ended up
