Lots of things can be classed as unfit for humans and yet are perfectly edible ......... Come to think of it, there are things that aren't edible that are classed as fit (connective tissue anyone?)

I always thought the pet food industry was where the condemned meat and the scraps from meat packing plants ended up
Thats perfectly possible as they only need to be passed at slaughter, what happens after that is anyones guess. Personally I won't be eating pet food except in the worst possible circumstances.

There is a pet food factory around here that gets steak from Sainsburys on the expiry date. I've known a few people that have worked there, and all the meat that goes in is the same as what you eat everyday, well if you eat pate, sausages, faggots etc.
I must admit this is a premium pet food brand, but I wouldn't have any problems eating it if I had to.

I used to have a friend who worked for a pet food manufacturer and they claimed that cat and dog food had to be safe for human consumption because when your children first learn to crawl around the floor they will put anything and everything they find into their mouths, as soon as your back is turned.

Plenty of choice and cheap as well, all pre-cooked as well.
Occasionally tescos have the 'look what we found' range on special for £1 per pouch. Whenever I see them I buy 30-50 at a time and we use them regularly camping and days out etc.

Cooked with some rice to bulk them out they make a substantial meal.

If you had to then pet food is certainly a viable option from what people have been saying. So that means your pets are fed and you can eat it as well if needed.

My dogs and cat are on raw diets now (they eat real food, not tinned and canned pet food) so that's not really an option for my family... we do stock up on bone treats though so I guess we could make some kinda broth/soup out of those!

HeHe made me laugh reading this thread

when I was a kid there was an old man living in our village, who used to eat nothing but cat food and vegetables, he used to visit the local shop regular as clockwork to get his tins of Kit-e-kat and he used to make pies with it, it never did him any harm either, because he lived to be 97 before he passed on :)

So yeah there's nothing wrong with it, in fact the tins of Winalot Casseroles and Butchers prime taste pretty good, i braved it out and tried it once and made a stew with 4 tins of butchers padded out with more veggies and a few dumplings, cooked long and slow Mmmmmm yum!
The nutritional content may be dubious, but in an emergency it will keep you alive, and as PMA is paramount to survival, nothing will bolster that like a reasonably full belly
So it's definitely on the storage list for my dog and as a kind redundancy plan for me too, and in a SHTF scenario you can trade with it too

Oh yeah my dog loved the stew as well
