Re: How many candles? testing 1-2-3
I found that ball candles burn for ages..... But they eat wax (a sphere has the maximum volume to surface ratio)
I've also got a star-pyramid that's fairly sparing on wax and nearly impossible to knock over
I've cast a few in old foil catfood trays (multi wick ones throw tons of light..... And might be good in a flowerpot heater)
But my favorate frugal option is a 'wax-lump' candle, you don't even need to melt all the wax

i have a couple of 100 bags of tea lights aswell as some larger candles hidden away, also have 10 paraffin storm lanterns aswell as a couple of decent tilley lamps and a coleman multifuel lantern too.
i filled up on paraffin recently as a local garage had it on special offer so have stocks in my BOL's aswell as a load at my base camp im building and at home.
i also have a huge box of different sized glow sticks i bought from a camping shop that was closing down, i may even sell some of those and a couple of the tilley / bialadin lamps i have if anyone is interested? PM me an email address and i will send some pics of what i have for sale, cant reply to PMs yet, not been added or something?

thanks for that Andy, I will hunt some of that down locally and try that next year
Re: How many candles? testing 1-2-3
My wife is into candles in a big way. She insists on keeping them in the freezer until required (along with her lipstick in the fridge?!?!).
The freezing of the candles is supposed to preserve their burn time over time... ie the belief is that a candle stored over time at room temperature will lose its potency in terms of light output and/or burn time... I have always been sceptical, but this thread made me look for documented accounts on this issue :
The Myth Busters came up with this :
We saw that if the candles were put in the freezer they burned slower, so they lasted a little longer then regular time and they metled all the way down (almost flat). The candles that were in room tempature burned faster and burned out faster they didn't even melt all the way down. So if you put your candles in the freezer they will burn slower so you can enjoy them longer. Since the candles were colder they burned slower and lasted longer, because they were colder than the room tempeture candles.

LifeHacker gives this :
Candles will last longer (almost 2X), if they are placed in the freezer for a day before using them. Chilling the wax gives it a bit longer before burning through and leaving you with an empty jar. For some candles this will also cause them to drip less and burn straight down without burning through the side of the candle.

A Thrifty Mrs gives :
Put the candle in the freezer...ground breaking stuff.
The only argument against freezing candles comes from The National Candle Association, which says :
Do not freeze candles. Handling candles this cold may cause them to crack and lose their integrity, making them unsafe to burn.

I was hoping to find something on freezing and the loss of some paraffin oil/wax/alcohol stuff or something, but it seems to be less scientific than that, but yes, FREEZE candles, just don't break them.

Tea lights. About 600. One bag still has a Woolworths label on it!
