RELAX R7 Woodburner with 27k BTU boiler Review

Post by Steveo82 »

Thought i would write a review on this as it really has made working in the shop 1000 time better. The design is easy to copy and with some small additions could be used to heat a dwelling and for cooking on during SHTF times.

I initially bought just the 24Kw burner to heat my workshop, just to take the chill out of the air during the colder months and stop my fingers from going numb. I was really impressed with the burner and spoke to the manufacturer about buying a smaller version for my shed. We had a good half hour chat about how well they had been selling and how the retro fit boilers were given a rave review. I bit the bullet and bought an R3 5Kw for my shed and the new 27K BTu add on boiler for my 24Kw workshop heater.
Installation of the boiler was easy, just drill two holes with a hole saw and screw in place with supplied fixings and some fire cement.
I installed an open vented central heating system with 4 600mm x 1800mm single radiators and a 3 speed A rated pump to heat my 2 storey workshop. I could/should add more radiators as these four are red hot and limits me filling the burner fully because the water gets too hot and i get overheating issues.
I have it set up on the lowest settings and a half-3 quarter load of seasoned logs burns for 4-8 hrs (temp depending)and heats the 12m x 6m building really really well. Last year it was -10 outside and 20 inside it was bliss.
I will get some pics if anyone is interested

Hi,

The prices looks very reasonable for a fairly powerful appliance.

Do you have a separate tank that the boiler feeds or do you just rely on the store of water in the boiler itself? Installing a tank (or a bigger tank) could help with your overheating issues - ie you run the burner flat out for long enough to heat a big tank up to say 85c - and then you have a store of heat to use when you need it.

I have a 300L thermal store attached to my wood burning range - but if I was doing it again I would look at getting a bigger tank (1000L?) which would mean I could run the burner at full throttle for a few hours and then probably not need to light it again for a couple of days.

I don't use the shop every day and I wanted to keep the costs down as its only a workshop so heat storage isn't an option.
