What meds should I stock up??
Re: What meds should I stock up??
Suture needles generally come with the thread attached, at least mine do? I'd agree with those as I've always had em in my explore kit, BUT, I think people should think very carefully before attempting to use them especially if you've never had any practice, they should be an absolute last resort, I did put up some videos here somewhere with pretty much complete tutorials on wound irrigation, sutures, steristrips and uses.
Edit: Found the post, everyone who has sutures in their kit should at least have watched these vids.

On top of my normal offshore medicine chest full of bandages, sticking, plasters, eyewash, savlon. E45, Vaseline etc etc I'm stocking up on this lot for an extended trip, hope I don't need it, but chances are I'll be using some of it even if only the latex gloves for engine work, and the vaseline and condoms for waterproofing electrics

Re: What meds should I stock up??
I do the same with Ibupforen - around 30p for 16 x 200mg tablets in Sainsbury's Local. They will allow you to buy (in my local store, anyway) one box of each, or two of paracetamol, or two of ibuprofen, per visit.notrab99 wrote:I keep adding a 16p pack of paracetamol to my weekly shop - you can't buy too many at the same time or you are considered a suicide attempt. I think these could be the most sort after drug and therefore of highest 'value' in a SHTF scenario. Lets be realistic, if you have lots of pain relief and someone with toothache has lots of 'sweets' there's a black market to die for ( I mean live for! )

Antihistamines; both tablet and liquid form, .
Calpol or the liquid paracetomol, can be used for babies children and people who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Antacids tablets and liquid.
eye wash, eye bath, eye patch.
headlice solution and fine comb, if you put lice solution on too a cotton bud and dab ticks with it, the ticks drop off, safer than trying to pull them off and have the heads break under the skin.
tweezers, scissors.
Tea tree oil, good anti fungal oil that can be used neat,
Lavender oil, a antiseptic, analgesic & antibiotic that is safe to use undiluted even on babies.
Clary sage oil, used as a steam inhalant for chest infections, can relieve a moderate asthma attack. a couple of drops added to a childs bath has a calming effect after major tantrums.
dressings, tape, sticking plasters [ if you have small children you will need a ton of these].
bandages, tubi grip, splints.
super glue, great for removing splinters, a couple of drops over the splinter let glue dry [without touching] pick glue off splinter comes out with the glue.
Nail polish remover for those who touched the super glue and now have there fingers, ect stuck together.
Vitamin tablets.
thermometors, spare battries, I have a couple of the old mercury thermometors, hard to find, a bugger to shake down, fragile and not advisable to be used on small children except under there arm.
disinfectant, and bleach.
gloves, latex and plastic.

For the liquid antihistamines, although they do work faster than tablet forms, some with different ingredients will work much faster than others; Priton (chlorpheniramine maleate) will work a lot faster than other liquid antihistamines because it is absorbed quicker than said others.
Calpol is honestly rubbish if you're over 12 years old, soluble paracetomal is a much better bet if you're older, tastes awful but is a much better way to control dosing rather than using calpol.
I've always been told that essential oils should not be used neat, especially tea tree oil because they can cause damage to healthy skin as well as disinfecting and preventing fungal infections? I may be wrong, so can anyone offer advice?
