What i have noticed
Re: What i have noticed
[quote="SooBee"]I've been doing jams and pickles for some time as a way to safely distribute the fruit and veg the church is given at harvest time. We are no longer allowed to take it to homes and hospitals the way it used to happen.
Why are you not allowed to distribute it
With fabrics, I buy lots when it is cheap and use when needed.
How do you store it I've always been worried about moths getting into the cloth. Does anyone know the longest cloth has been stored for.

Good question junmist. Something else to find out about. I would love to know too. I think I'm moving into another level of prepping!junmist wrote:

This is a very good topic. Very good. Glass jars and bottles aresomething we take for granted. Glass is a good , stable form of container. I collect jars and lids, for my chutneys and pickles. I also collect wine bottles and caps(and there are many ) for my homebrewing.
Interesting that right now, these are throwaway items. In, say, a decade, they could be history.
Good thread.

Re: What i have noticed
I was making my first ever chutney last month, and was planning to use some old jam jars that we have lying around. What does my wife do? Go out and BUY three brand new jars.
I mean, they're nice jars and all, but I was looking forward to recycling/re-using those old jars...

Hi AWR
What recipe/flavour? Im going to be attempting some this year (after growing stuff i hope)
Anything you can post in recipes??
At least the new jars can be re-used the start of the recycling cycle
Re: What i have noticed
When that hot chutney is in those recycled jars, it is very satisfying to hear the lids "POP!" As they cool and the vacuum is formed.

I did caramelised red onion chutney, using this recipe:

It takes a month to mature apparently, so I won't be opening it until at least 20th February, which I've just realised is tomorrow...
I'll let you know what I think of it!
Re: What i have noticed
On the topic of collecting and re-using jars. I like making jam with fruit gathered/grown and chutneys with whatever I can get my hands on cheap/or grow.
I have learned that re-using the smallish ones works better for us. The jars fit better into the fridge door (after opening) and it gets used up quicker so it is used up before it gets too old to eat.
Also if you give any away or do a swap, you don't give away too much ... Not a skinflint honest
