Just picked up a bargain CB radio for the truck, cost less than 50 quid and it has 9 different bands on it as well as AM. :)

Got signals from all over Europe when testing it this morning.

Anyone in areas 1 or 2 want to start a weekly or monthly network?

I'm up for that. At the moment, my radio is 2m and 70cm. I may be upgrading to one which can cover the CB freqs so, yes, a regular contact would be good, especially as we are potentially coming into the winter weather period.

Briggs.
I recently experienced Plymouth City centre so that's why I prep.

What a fantastic idea, shame I am on the other side of the country.

Hopefully a few more northerly sorts will spot this :)

How does a Sunday afternoon sound? Between 1 and 2.30 perhaps?

Sorry if this has been posted but given the impending changes to CB in the UK what kit is recommended? Base and / or handheld.

Handhelds are not, or ever will be, great with the low frequencies that CB uses. That is one of the reasons why I have recommended the long-term prepping communications network use something like 172.

But just about any CB radio set that you can get now is going to be ok, the changes offer some tweaks that are only available in high end sets costing >200 quid anyway and most people won't start out with one of them.

The only thing I would say is get a radio capable of both UK and CEPT (European) bands. But really good old UK band is fine for most stuff.

I've read you are the resident expert Malthouse. Would it be possible to utilise the web to increase the coverage of the monthly network to include more people.

What band were you thinking of and where are you roughly? Im in Co Durham on UK FM mobile for now but seriously thinking of upgrading later for extra channels for now though Im looking to craft a dipole in the next few days Im living on a hill top I expect to be hitting some impressive distances on legit gear with no burners involved as I have done in the past probably more to location than anything else as in the old days people used to travel here to DX from the hill tops.

I have high hopes for a vertical dipole fitted to a fiberglass windsurfing mast I have and if it works I will strap it to the roof rack and make a drive over pole mount to get out with it.
