Might I offer this
I've just bought the Carbon version, you could get about five for your money
Or this for a budget version
I also got the Heavy duty, which is a real tank of a knife (but only seem to be available in Carbon)
These are all in the Mora class, inexpensive blades with no frills designed to be used as hard working tools by builders, plumbers and other tradesmen.
Cheap enough to have "One to Lose, one to Abuse and one to Use"
I too mentioned these a while ago, i'm well chuffed with mine and only £8. Not really that bothered about the sheath, but i recon i'll make a leather one, the heavy duty one is thick enough for splitting logs. Would be nice too know how much tang is in the handle, but for £8....

deffinately recomend gerber prodigy. or save up and get its big brother them LMF
Yep the Mora is a brill knife for the price.
and Yep the Prodigy is ace , I love it. same for the LMF would have got it but too pricey at the time but prob a bit OTT for what the OP wants
I also thought the BG was rubbish , but did some research when I was buying the other month and yes they had a recall on the first batch for the pommel but were fine after and if you google some reviews a lot of hard core knife users were pleasantly surprised when they actually tested it and found it a decent bit of kit.
tanstaafl wrote:Well I was searching for a knife in this price range a few months ago and got the Gerber Prodigy which is a hell of a knife it ticks all of your boxes except the serrated edge and you can find it for a tad over £50 (maybe less) and for some reason you can get the Tanto version for £39.
Also don't discount the Bear Grylls ultimate survival knife, yes it looks a bit gimmicky but check out the reviews, it also ticks every one of your boxes
Personally I would go for the Mora or two , if I had had mine before the Gerber I would not have bought the gerber, but if you really must have a knife with a Battening end ( Its for battening pieces of wood for kindling hence the name) I would go for the BG ultimate knife as it does not look too tactical (military) when you are fishing, you might get strange looks with the prodigy as its a tad Rambo ish , I hear there is a new version of the BGs out but have not seen it yet.
Jase
I got a Mora already. Was thinking of the Gerber Prodigy already. Thx.

A knife is a piece of steel with a handle. The steel has to be SHARP. That is the Butcher in me. Knives are the simplest tools. Made complicated by folk who do not use them in their everyday work.

The bloke in that video should buy a tommahawk or a hatchet instead of breaking knives?

A knife is a tool. It can perform many task above and beyond your comprehension. The argument over knives is purley based on what people use it for. I'd like to see some one use a carving knife to make a wooden cup with all there fingers still together. Work out what you want to do with your knife then look for what does the jobs you want the best. Even a butcher uses a variety of knives depending on the job there doing.
Its like everything, there are very few true 'multi' tools, that will do everything you want them to do and do it as well as you want them to!
I am still toying with the trail tomahawk as i recon it will do quite alot from fine to hard work?
There will always be a compromise.
