Ok, this is going to sound a bit stupid but hear me out...
I'm in the process of re-building my BOB and one of my primary concerns is that should I need to travel long distances on foot (for possibly days) I'm going to need food and water. This means that everything will have to fit into a medium sized MOLLE/rucksack and weight must be kept to a minimum.
Over the last few days I have been trying to find a type of food that would suit the potential situation. I realize that breakfast bars wont give the right nutrients needed and regular MRE's are out of my budget at the moment. I had thought about packet noodles, but this would mean carrying around a mess tin, pocket stove and gas, plus again, they don't give the right nutrients. Cans of soup are an idea but are bulky.
So while I was sitting amongst the organized chaos of equipment taken out of my BOB trying to think of a type of food that is small, ready to eat, pre-packaged, and has all the nutrients for a balanced diet; my cat wondered over and climbed into the empty bag. What a good idea I thought. and that is why I'm asking you guys for some advice. Cat food is pre-packaged, ready to eat, cheap alternatives to MRE's and as a bonus, they are specifically designed to give a balanced diet. Now don't get me wrong, I haven't gone ahead and tried eating it yet, in all honesty I don't know if I could stomach it, but when faced with starvation I think I would change my mind? Has anyone else had this idea, or should I stick to the canned soup?

Plenty of choice and cheap as well, all pre-cooked as well.

That's unbelievably good value, I have looked on Amazon before but I only came across boxes of MRE's that worked out about £10 per meal and full of other junk like hot chocolate powder etc. But I think I might get some of those12mp82 wrote:http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007SL33MG/r ... wo=&hvqmt=

well i do know that pet food factories have petfood taste testers they earn about £30k a year ( with free mints i hope )
so can not see why you couldnt pack some if you want, but would stress cats and dogs are meat eaters only where as we eat meat and veg as are balanced diet so would be more inclined to invest in some freeze dried pouches witch cateer to are needs
like some thing like this
http://evaq8.co.uk/Mountain-House-Spagh ... Pouch.html
or even
http://evaq8.co.uk/NRG-5-Emergency-Food ... cuits.html
if you want compact lightweight biscuits which would get you out trouble with good shelf life and little cost
hope this helps

They actually have tasters? Wouldn't it work out more economical to have a company cat to do the job for free? lolynotshi wrote:well i do know that pet food factories have petfood taste testers they earn about £30k a year ( with free mints i hope )
You've got a good point though, I guess they're not so balanced after all. Still, the fruit/veg side (I think) is the easy part to get hold of, I mean your out in the countryside and you find some blueberrys or an apple tree for example - easy. But I don't know if I could go and tear a cow apart
Yea that sounds about right! I'm glad I'm not the only one that's considered the idea. I mean when its so cheap we may as well take full advantage. I mean at the end of the day yes, it is meant for cats/dogs but the meat its self is still Salmon/Beef/Tuna etc, the kind of stuff we eat anywayDjorn wrote:Considering the latest Reports....I dont think it will be long before somebodies claims cat / dog food in burgers....

You'd be surprised what you can put into a hedgerow salad; red clover flowers, honeysuckle flowers, and many other edible flowers, along with sorrel, plantain, dandelion leaves, chickweed, and lots of other leafy greens.
In the spring and summer, your vitamin intake via greens is not going to be a problem!

Have you ever considered getting a dehydrator and making jerky and fruit and veg leathers. All of those can be eaten on the go without cooking and are full of all the good stuff. Pumpkin is particularly good and is full of goodness.

Brambles has a good point, dried meats (jerky, biltong etc) and dried fruit are probably a better bet then catfood and are lighter (I'm assuming you're talking about the pouches rather then cans.... If you're carrying cans you might as well carry people-food)
Some supermarkets have soups, 'canned' meats (Spam, corned beef), fish (tuna and mackerel that I've seen) and a few other things in retort-pouches (effectively canned, precooked in a sealed container.... It just happens to be a foil packet rather then a metal tube) Nip down to your local one and check it out.
Somewhere theres a web-thread where a guy works out the calorie load of various foodstuffs. Not surprisingly peanut butter comes out on top, but theres a good showing from other common foods (I think he took the tare weight into account... I'll just go check)
