Need to be kept in the dark or painted black as algae will grow in the water when light is present. OK, I guess, if you will be changing water and bleaching containers ever 6 months or so.

When you say bleaching the containers, would I need to empty the container, pour some bleach into the bottle and mix with water to swill around and clean? Then re-fill? Thanks for your help. J

can you not just drop in a couple of water purifying tablets to stop the algae, or even a few potassium permanganate crystals? :geek:

It's not the algae your worried about there's many other harmful bacteria that can grow in those containers that's why you bleach it and replace the water:)
First in, last out.

Area 2, when SHTF that's when you'll care about surviving.
