Re: LORA ((Meshtastic network))

Seems to make sense. In terms of cheaper alternatives, I'm afraid I can't help there other than to suggest full on DIY versions or, I know you said you don't want to use a phone, but might it be possible to use an Android tablet (or phone without SIM card just as a tablet) ? This would allow you to ...

Re: LORA ((Meshtastic network))

I'm not sure if this is what you meant but you don't need to know anyone using Meshtastic, you use other nodes automatically, that's just how it works. Communication is encrypted over nodes so is secure. There are maps of node locations - https://meshmap.net/ Even on its own though with a reasonable...

Re: LORA ((Meshtastic network))

LoRa has a very different use case to radio and they're not really comparable. LoRa is concerned with low energy, long range but low data rate transmission. SMS messages or other small data sets are perfect but you'll not be transmitting voice, even low quality. The mesh features greatly expand the ...

I've thought about eating them but I don't think they're worth the effort and I'm certainly not going to eat them every day! They're not tasty enough to me.

Snails galore

The main pest in our garden is the slug. We usually get a good deal of these with the odd snail for good measure. This year though we have been invaded by snails. Our garden is pretty small with probably around 20m2 of raised beds plus pots, but this year I'm collecting around 20-30 fully grown gard...

Amortization is complex but essentially each month you pay a 12th of 8.9% of the outstanding debt in interest, the rest of paid off the capital. Check out the amortization table here for a full breakdown - https://www.calculator.net/loan-calculator.html?cloanamount=7%2C500&cloanterm=5&cloant...

Re: Do You Feel We Are Heading For The Perfect Storm?

Cities are actually very good at what they do. Economies of scale and concentration of people resource allow for a much more rapid advancement of science, technology, commerce, arts, and so on. They're credited with a lot of improvements in our current way of life. Whether or not such rapid advancem...

Re: What are your thoughts?

I believe that this is where it hits the fan for many. The way I see it is that it's just about the line between the haves and have nots. For the last few decades, the line between having and not having has shifted massively towards the many. We've had a period of sustained and increasing prosperity...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 9

I dono about anybody else but I get a real feeling of things getting serious and serious preppers moving up a gear. 100%. Whatever the cause, things will become much more expensive. I don't think we've hit the tipping point yet but I think this winter will be the point where the S hits the fan in r...

I can't see that the IT engineer skills would be any use but you never know. I think that IT skills would be really useful in a wide variety of situations. Setting up a local DNS server when regional/global ones fail but the internet is still working. In a wide ranging internet outage, getting a lo...
