Medusa, what a shame about the precious jewellery :( but what you've actually done is remarkable, that's a lot. Not trekking about the house in the middle of the night is such a boon :lol: and it sounds like the house is more pleasant to live in, full stop, as well as better for the offspring to face.

Depending on your hinges the nail can push up from the bottom and remove the rod connecting the two flanges together, Your decorator or husband/yourself or previous owners may have painted over these. once removed the hammer and said nails can then be used to secure doors in new location.
