It also depends if you are building it as a fallout out shelter only or for blast protection too, and that decision would depend on location. I would say option 2 makes it significantly more difficult. The book mentioned above (nwss) is the best one I have read by a mile.

Nuclear war survival skills by c.h.kearny is another very good and detailed book on the subject. Not seen a cheap version. Think e-book is around 8 quid and more for paperback. Having said that if your interested in the subject I highly recommend it.

And ponder where I can store another 3 months worth of food - not sure I want to start digging the back garden up yet but having said that it could be a very secure and well hidden.
