I think I read you can do something similar with a plastic dust bin set in the ground with the top sitting a couple of inches proud of the surface to protect against flooding. I saw it in Abundance by Alys Fowler but I don't have my copy to hand.

I didn't know there was such a recent version of Nuclear War Survival Skills. Earlier versions are freely available to download such as here http://www.oism.org/nwss/ (1987 version). Definitely worth reading.

Bicarbonate of soda will work well on indigestion (the bicarb) but please be aware that it'll also do a good job of giving you high blood pressure as it will contribute to your sodium intake (the soda). I wouldn't want to be taking it over a sustained period especially if I'm surviving on high salt ...

I echo jansman's advice - start with a small area and look after it will. Be wary of over ambition particularly when you start reading seed catalogues. I'd recommend Grow Your Own Vegetables by Joy Larkcom.
