Re: And sow it begins.

The first batch of beans are in the soil now, and the rest won't be far behind. The broccoli is coming along nicely, and the main crop spuds are chitting merrily away. The tomato seedlings are a bit slow out of the blocks though.

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 5.

Have you had a look into dehydrating ? You can do whole meals so if you're catering for fussy eaters you can tailor them. Dehydrating is something on my list to look at in the longer term. I am quite time poor at the moment, so am prioritising getting some basics laid down first and then spending m...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 5.

I finally found some time to start clearing the garden for planting. We built some raised beds for veg last year and this is their first winter. The high ones at the back are good, but the low ones at the front have retained moisture much better than we anticipated and the soil is a lot wetter than ...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 5.

I've continued to slowly build my food stock with each weekly shop and have finally located a sensible box for storage. Everything is now recorded, in one place, and has best before dates marked in big characters on it (thank you whoever I picked that tip up from on here). I also managed to find the...

Re: Kids clothes

As Korolev said, Facebook is an excellent source of cheap children's clothes. You should be able to find local selling groups easily enough. Also, depending on your location, you might have local baby/children specific tabletop sales. These can be very good sources for cheap items. Check for local b...

Re: Over focussing on the obvious Medicine supplies

Yeah, I can't imagine the cat would be up for it, ours would be a nightmare and the chances of doing it a second time would be zero. We've had to de-tick our moggies a couple of times - girl cat isn't a fan. I kneel down, clamp her between my legs and pin with both hands whilst my wife extracts the...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 5.

I have my first items for my food stock (mmm, corned beef on special offer) and added them to my stock tracking spreadsheet. Unfortunately, my wife has purloined the box I was going to use for storage and I discovered that the place I thought was big enough to put the box is actually a bit too full ...

Re: Growing food. I know NOTHING but want to.

I would like to use nematodes, but they are just too expensive! It makes the whole business of food growing uneconomical ( for me anyway).Everything I grow,we eat,and I always garden as though we really WILL need it,if that makes sense. When the family was young, and money was very, very tight, the gar...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 5.

Has anyone had any luck finding cramp balls these past few months? I've had some problems with that, but the doctor gave me some exercises to do. So far this week I have: Written down some of my nebulous thoughts and made them into coherent plans and analysis Written down long random lists of ideas...

Re: Growing food. I know NOTHING but want to.

Have you ever tried nematodes for pest control? We trialled the slug specific ones last season and they were very effective. You can get nematodes that target a lot of different pests, and the slug ones work on snails as well (although they are a bit less effective as snails are surface dwellers and...
