Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 9

I make probiotic yogurt because the tablets are so expensive. I crushed about half a dozen probiotic tablets and added a spoonful of inulin to give it something to feed on, then mixed it to a slurry with some milk. After that I made yogurt in the normal way using the crushed tablets as the starter. ...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 9

I’m having another go at fermented food and drink. Partly for health reasons but it seems a good way to preserve food that doesn’t rely on electricity. But I wish I could think of more ways to include it in meals. Sauerkraut and pork is the obvious one but what do you eat kimchi with? Coming into el...

Re: Paint disposal

We can take paint tins to our local tip but anything else we have to order a hazardous waste collection. The council will do one collection for free so we need to go through the cellar and the shed and collect all the old half empty nasties together. One thing I am having trouble getting rid of is s...

Uniqlo are very good for Heattech. No many branches but good online delivery.

I like silk as I find artificial fibres can get a bit too warm. Lands End do very good ones but the price is eyewatering unless you buy in the sale. Mind you they are like sofa retailers in the frequency of their sales

Re: How do you keep track of your preps

I have almost trained my mob to take the oldest item first by arranging things on the shelf so that they “arrive on the right and leave on the left”. It still relies on me putting the stuff on the shelves and shuffling it all up so that the oldest items are at the left hand side of a stash but it me...

Re: From high technology to low technology

Glorious sunny day down here in SE London/N Kent. So I thought I'd make some coleslaw to have with a quiche for supper. I could shred the cabbage with a knife but that doesn't look so nice and even or at the other end of the gadget spectrum I have a fancy food processor which is a pain in the whatno...

Aldi currently have a stove top espresso maker for £6.99. That's the cheapest I've seen anywhere. As we have a gas hob it means t'usband can have his caffeine fix. I need to source a hand cranked bean grinder at some stage but we normally have enough ground to see out a power cut

In the supermarket you can use the torch on your phone but you might get a security guard looking sideways at you if he thinks you are doing something odd

Re: Indefensible Food Wealth !

I've only ever done a bit of mackerel fishing towing a line behind a boat. But when we catch them I try and kill them quickly and effectively. My daughters rolled their eyes and laughed in scorn at me saying I didn't want any creature to suffer if I could avoid it as I bashed it firmly with the prie...

Re: Pocket SAS Survival Book In Zipped Wallet

I don't need distance vision glasses any more since having my cataracts done (now there's a form of prepping!!) but sadly it doesn't fix age related long sightedness. However I manage perfectly well with pound shop reading glasses at £5 a go. I have lots so I can always find a pair. Mostly +1.5 but ...
