Re: Anyone growing winter crops?
I'm reporting on the new variety of Autumn sown/cropping broad beans which I sowed end of July/start of Aug well they've been a roaring success and I reckon I can start to harvest them soon. Stacks of flowers still so hopefully a spread out harvest time too. I have much bigger pods than I ever get o...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 6.
I finally dug out my steam juicer I got years ago from Tchibo so we've now got grape juice and strawberry juice canned up ready to go. I'm really pleased with how easy it was to use and the amount of juice we got from the fruit. I usually use an attachment on my kenwood which sieves out pips etc but...

Re: Vacuum sealer
I managed to get a foodsaver from Lakeland in a sale but the cost of bags from them is nuts. I did manage to pick up the jar sealing attachments for both the regular and widemouth jars for literally a pittance compared to what they're selling for now when I last looked the price had gone up substant...

Re: Where do you grow your peppers?
I've noticed a lot of weird goings on this year compared to a normal year in the South at least. I think some of it has been caused by varieties I grow by this I mean I grow ones bred for the UK climate which at one time was always cold, wet and miserable even in the summer  It has been exceptio...

Re: Where do you grow your peppers?
I tend to grow mine in the greenhouse but had the same issue this year as many others with ripening! I did get a stonking good harvest though and my surplus which was left out to take its chances are still growing well so I will leave them be unless it gets really cold. Some people actually overwint...

Jenny I'm enjoying reading about your escapades with your food storage. I've got a lot of similar stuff in my stores so it's interesting to read how you're using it. Did some more preserving today and made a perfectly edible loaf this week with OOD yeast and bread flour as a test. Thankfully t...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 6.
This entire week is being spent teaching my son (20) the finer aspects of home preserving. He's turned into an amazing grower but needed some serious work on his skills to preserve what he has grown. He has Autism but this makes him a super keen and extra diligent learner you just need to know how t...

Re: What are you dehydrating?
I've made a mash up of mushroom stalks with a few onions, garlic and seasonings (chilli works well) fry them all lightly and blitz then dehydrate and it makes a great leather.Break off a bit to add to soup and stews or you can powder it down to use as stock. My scally is currently doing some apple pu...

Hello everyone from down south
Hi there I've been reading these boards for some years now but don't think I ever got around to registering so have taken the plunge today. I've used my usual monicker so some may recognise me from another place. I'm not new to prepping but we are just finding our feet again after a run of major eve...
