Re: New in Scotland
There are plenty of resources out there to help get going with ham radio, free courses, YouTube videos and I just joined a Discord channel to take my Full License - hopefully in October.

Re: Cheapest non-3 PAYG SIM
Thanks for that, I'll look into it. The only drawback for me is that O2 coverage where I live is virtually non-existent. I had to make a CISAS complaint against O2 around the time I moved into my current house because their coverage map was a complete joke. I took out the contract before I moved in ...

Cheapest non-3 PAYG SIM
I have been thinking of avoiding using my iPhone away from home for reasons which I hope do not require explanation and get an old Nokia 8210 and have my calls and messages forwarded to it from my home based iPhone. There are some good options with 3 but their SIMs are 3G which will not work in non-...

Re: New in Scotland
Those heaters remind me of the Herman Nelson heaters we used in Norway. It's a long time ago but I think we draped something like a parachute over the two most forward rotors (of a Wessex V) with the Herman Nelson blowing hot air into it so that the mechanics could work without being completely froz...

The only hole anywhere when the windows and doors are closed is the letterbox - I suppose that might be an extreme opt...

Re: New in Scotland
It's a matter of space, nothing more. Before my landlord changed the heating system, I pretty much only used the stove and used the oil when things got unbearable.

Funny experience
I have a distant background in radio, I used to do morse in the Sea Cadets and I was a radio mechanic in the Fleet Air Arm for ten years but after I left the RN, I didn't really bother with it too much until I bought a couple of Baofeng UV-5Rs a few years ago and I recently decided to take my Founda...

Re: Morse Code
I learned morse code, semaphore and signals when I was a Sea Cadet in the 70s - I actually have a couple of silver medals from communications competitions in NW England. It's all still in there but it needs warming up. I remember getting my Ys and Qs, Gs and Ws mixed up and stopping to think about a...
