Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12
I switched that rubbish off- last people I'd want advice from in an emergency is the government! Seriously though I live in the middle of nowhere and can't imagine any scenario where it would be of use to me. In a city perhaps I'd think differently. Incidently a prepper neighbour thinks the same way.

And like any prep- it's only a prep if you're competent in it's use, and know it well enough to trust it.

Re: Prepping is getting bigger in the UK
I'd agree the news aspect has a lot to do with it- we're bombarded with news form all sorts of sources these days, and the more sensationalist the better from the point of view of those proffering it. Remember a time when windy weather just happened, rather than making headlines for several days? We...

Funnily enough, I had several trays of French beans which had shown no signs of life after 9 days of sitting in a warm greenhouse, in damp seed compost. As soon as the weather turned I had 2" bean plants within the space of around 14 hours  They must have felt the changing weather and d...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12
Still got a few more veg to plant out yet. I am rather late this year, but with our long long days through summer, they should catch up. I would't worry, a neighbour got everything sown early, and has had awful germination, as low as 20% of a lot of things. I only got most of my seeds in trays and ...

Re: Entertainment in a prolonged bug-in
I'm the same, enough projects, things to make or fix, to fill several lifetimes! Even in winter by candlelight, if it came to it, there is no end of stuff that always needs doing let alone things I want to do. Loads of books around the place which I may or may not ever get round to reading. Never ha...

If I was sensible, I'd use my 19kg propane cylinders and boat oven on a daily basis in my off-grid house. I'm not sensible, so use a variety of paraffin pressure stoves from the 19th century onwards, because they are fun, economical, efficient and very reliable if maintained.

Apparently back boilers are now illegal There are now back boiler stoves on the market which meet the 2002 Ecodesign regulations, so are legal to install as I understand it. Another option if you have outbulding space is a pellet fired boiler and thermal store- that removes the issue of any particu...

One other initial thought- I assume these gateways/batteries are Chinese? Given they're likely connected to the web, how much information do they communicate back to the servers which I assume are in China? What is the security like to prevent hacking or provision of regular security patches? Some ...

Agreed, there is something very comforting about that roar. Also early warning if anything goes wrong, not that it tends to.ForgeCorvus wrote: ↑Thu May 22, 2025 6:13 pmSnow: I like the fact that it sounds like a doodlebug when its running at full whack
