Re: Weighing up the pros and cons of new equipment

I cook everything from scratch and other that a stick blender and a slow cooker everything in the kitchen is traditional. My large Le Creuset pan collection is from the 1970s. And as good as the day it was made. I've recently gone through 2 dehydrators, and neither lasted 2 years. So I'm not buying ...

Re: 10 million in severe poverty

Most places have a community centre could you be allowed in Monday to Friday say from 5pm to 1030pm to sit in a heated room and watch TV with your neighbours only cost is heating one room and TV. That's a good idea for old folk. I think the community centres in most towns have a lot of activities o...

Re: 10 million in severe poverty

My wife is in teaching and sees poverty everyday. Free ( universal) school meals would be a very good start. The thing is, they technically are not free. We pay ours out of the block grant we get back from Westminster plus the additional top rate of income tax we pay up here. You can’t learn on an ...

Re: 10 million in severe poverty

Community is the reason why I’m a fan of all children receiving free school meals. I’ve seen poverty up close and it’s not pretty, universal school meals ends stigmatisation and ensures all kids of all backgrounds get fed. Hell, I’d bring back the milk! The cost of providing free school meals for a...

Re: 10 million in severe poverty

Craigmillar has always been a good strong local community KF, hope they hang on there. I would be a very strong believer in community cafes/kitchens apart from being angry that in this day and age they are needed at all. But I think it's the way to go, and you could also get some education going in...

Re: Potato storage

Growing different produce and swapping is a great idea.
This would be very handy for my courgette surplus. God only knows what I was thinking when I planted 16 courgette plants.

Re: 10 million in severe poverty

I've just googled the definition of Severe Poverty in the UK , and according to Professor google it is those existing on 60% of the median UK income. But I think this is an outdated definition and all things are relative. For this definition doesn't take into account the massive price hikes in almos...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 9

I've spent the last two hours in the woods gathering blaeberries or bilberries / Nordic Blueberries. My fingers have now turned blue with the juice. Blaeberries take forever to pick but make the absolute best jams and are delicious added to fruit crumbles. And talking of crumbles it looks like I'm i...
