Will it Mylar?

Post by mushroom »

I was perusing Approved Food sometime last week and came upon a bargain offer for bread mix - 3.5kg bags of white bread mix, stated to make over 100 rolls or 13 loaves per bag! So I bought 4 at the pricey sum of 99p each!! They arrived today and I have my Mylar bags at the ready - but one of the ingredients (admittedly way down the list) is vegetable oil, as this is a 'just add water' mix. How long do you think they will last in Mylar?? Any Mylar aficionados out there??

Mylar or not, vegetable oil will go rancid after about 18 months afaik. However, in bread making the fat content is usually used to affect the texture of the end result bread and moisture retention. The fat content isn't actually a requirement to make a bread. If you don't use the fat content you'll get a bread that is a bit rougher and may go stale a bit quicker but it's still very edible.

Hmmm...I've never actually stored anything other than dried goods. in mylar bags. But to be honest, for the sake of a few quid, I would mylar it anyway and just see what happens when you open the bag at a later date.

I will do a bit of research later on and post any findings on this thread.

Thanks for replies, I think you're right, itsy - if it doesn't work then I've lost nothing really - may as well give it a go!

Hi - given Cromicom's advice, I would start to use the first one and store the rest - it might be a waste of your Mylar bags if they won't extend the shelf life. You would still be covered for white rolls for the next 18 months or so if the SHTF today. That's still longer than some of the BB dates on many of my recently purchased canned goods. The Mylar bags might be best used to store flour. Less than £4 for 400 rolls is fab and it will save you a fortune NOW, especially if you have a family.
