New to this

Post by kleesrosegarden »

Hi all

We live in London and given the number of threats both natural and human-made I am seriously considering our bug-in/bug-out plan. We're currently a family of two (plus a cat, which I dearly hope we'd be able to bring with us should anything happen).

We have family in a very rural situation within 50 miles of where we live - two houses close together, so this is our #1 plan if our current location becomes unsafe. The rural location includes a safe well and generators as it suffers from current frequent power cuts. It's also reasonably well stocked with livestock and a decent garden.

I am pretty old school and know how to grow a garden and to meal-plan and cook with few resources. I am currently considering our requirements for stockpiling - we are moving from a smallish two bed flat to a three bed house with a separate garage we can use for storage. I am currently running down our three months of stored food etc so we don't have to move with it (and also to do some stock control/turnover) so we are exposed at the moment.

Given our Plan A is BO rather than BI I am struggling to work out what to prioritise - if we were in a rural location I would have water and food for a long period as a first priority, but would welcome advice about what the most sensible planning would be for a Plan A BO. Should we seek to store some stuff in the rural location, with back up supplies at our new house? Or is it daft to think we could get out of the city in the event of a major catastrophe, and get our stores here in order?

Thanks,
KRG

Hiya and welcome

Given that Plan#1 is to BO to family you should tailor your preps with that in mind.

Store some water, but have more water treatment available (water is heavy, Purifiers are not)
Store food that is more portable and in a way that is easier to load in your car (use totes and crates rather then shelves)
Store as much fuel for the car as you can (there are legal limits and Insurers/landlords don't like hazards)
Get the cat used to traveling in a cat box, have a Pet BoB sorted.

Thats advice from a country boy whos never had to Bug anywhere
But its offered freely and sincerly

Hi there kleesrosegarden,

In the event of a major incident/catastrophe your No1 BO plan sounds good. Bugging out to family only 50 miles away is a great option.

Are the family in tune with the prepping mentality; would they be happy with you storing copious quantities of supplies at theirs?

Whilst you'll want to have some supplies at your own house for more minor, short term incidents, you can't guarantee to successfully load up and carry large amounts of provisions from there to your BOL in major SHTF incidents, so it's better that the main supplies are already there.

Is it daft to think you could get out of the city in the event of a major catastrophe? No, it's not daft at all. Don't forget, most people around you will be in a completely confused, traumatised state, not knowing what to do. You on the other hand will have clear plans, and a well rehearsed routine in place. You will know where you're going and will act swiftly and decisively to get the hell out of there whilst everyone else around you is either running round like a headless chicken or is just sitting doing nothing in the vain hope that "the government will sort it all out."

Look carefully at all the possible routes you could take to your BOL; more secluded routes avoiding densely populated areas would be favourable. Also bear in mind the possibility that you might not have/be able to use your car.

Regards, Panther.

Hi Kleesrosegarden
I wouldn't want to run my supplies down completely (I've just started prepping and am trying to build mine up as fast as possible) - why not borrow a trailer or hire a transit and transfer as much as possible over to your BOL now before you move to your new house, assuming your family are on board with that (will you be sharing everything with them?). Whilst I would still want to keep a decent store at my home (you may not be able to or want to leave right away), there's no way it could all be transported (especially without arousing unwanted attention) to your BOL in an emergency. That's the point at which you grab your BOB, if you're that far down the prepping line, and go - in your car if you can. I would be interested in your recipes :). Can we have a preppers' recipes thread :).
