i bought 4 Kg of white rice for long term storage, i have also cleaned up my BOL and set up a camouflaged Hooped Bivvy. i also buried a backpack with cooking items such a a steel mess tin knife, fork & spoon and a cup. it also contains food like rice, pasta etc in a Mylar bag i have a few tins as well. i have a few tins of beans/ sausages and 6 500ML bottles of water. i usually go up there for 24-48 Hrs every 2 weeks during the summer so this time i will be able to carry more kit i usually wouldn't bring as allot of essential kit is already at the BOL. i also bought some of the FIRE DRAGON GEL on eBay for £10. a prepper youtuber i follow reviewed the gel and it burns ontop of anything even water! at the time he reviewed it it was alot dearer and and its went down quite a bit.

an idea was to put the gel into rectangle ice cube moulds. then you just pop one cube out for the fire and it burned for Approx. 5-8 minutes until the fire gets properly started.
i have also tried taking a pencil sharpener and sharpening sticks to use the shavings as tinder. it worked surprisingly well and is now part of my EDC.

Got my lantern and torch delivered today, had a test with lantern and brighter than thought it would be. Not tested the RAC car torch/lantern as can be charged in car or via USB port and can be wound up too.

An honest chap Briggs, with wick lanterns stick to paraffin. I see the term kerosene used more and more...yet another Americanism drifting into use in the UKBriggs 2.0 wrote:I'm a novice too. I should give them an overhaul with new wicks and then try different fuel types.munchh wrote:There are loads of sellers on e-bay, i just chose the cheapest it was about £2.70 per meter, but it all depends on what size you want, seemed ok to me, i use parrafin, to be honest they are a total back up, i have 2x storm lantern both bootsale finds, a glass (smallish) table lamp and a brass flat bottom one that has a hadle so you can carry it like wee willy winky (needs a glass), i also found one of those 'weeble' bottom nursery lamps, but ive not got round to sorting that one out yet.
To be honest i wouldnt know the difference between the two fuels?

Shop around and buy Methanol (<£1 a litre), FDG is grossly overpriced. Don't drink it or wash in it and Methanol is safe enough to use, I use it in my Trangia stoves. Bulk buying Ethanol can also prove a frugal investment. Ethanol has a slightly higher 'energy' content than methanol but in the real world you'll see little or no difference in terms of fuel performance.Ghost Prepper wrote:i bought 4 Kg of white rice for long term storage, i have also cleaned up my BOL and set up a camouflaged Hooped Bivvy. i also buried a backpack with cooking items such a a steel mess tin knife, fork & spoon and a cup. it also contains food like rice, pasta etc in a Mylar bag i have a few tins as well. i have a few tins of beans/ sausages and 6 500ML bottles of water. i usually go up there for 24-48 Hrs every 2 weeks during the summer so this time i will be able to carry more kit i usually wouldn't bring as allot of essential kit is already at the BOL. i also bought some of the FIRE DRAGON GEL on eBay for £10. a prepper youtuber i follow reviewed the gel and it burns ontop of anything even water! at the time he reviewed it it was alot dearer and and its went down quite a bit.

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
I have a small-ish oil lamp which says use paraffin only, is kerosene the same as paraffin??
Also, what would happen if I put other fuel into it? I also only have the wick it came with so no idea how long it lasts for and are all round string looking wicks the same??
Sorry for lots of questions but new to equipment type preps, fine with food though

Believe they are the same parafin is English name for it
Re: What Preps are you doing this week
I have never seen kerosene for sale in this country. Paraffin here. Kerosene tends(I think) to be USA and Asia.I think it is the same thing. Unfortunately paraffin is damned expensive now. I stocked up 12 years ago when the local petrol station sold it from the pump. They are gone now. I have 5 gallons left. I ise it for greenhouse heating.
Lighting I use LED. NO fire risk, no smell and more economical.

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
I'll probably look into buying some methanol soon, I don't have any type of stove/ burner yet for wild camping though im going to get one soon as now more people are out in the good weather and a fire with dried sticks etc is a lot smokier and smells a lot more than a stove. are there any stoves in particular that anybody would recommend? my local outdoors shop does one for £20 but im not sure if its a good investment or not as I don't know much about them.rik_uk3 wrote:Shop around and buy Methanol (<£1 a litre), FDG is grossly overpriced.
