Greetings from Devon

Post by MissPrep »

Hi there,
I grew up in the middle of nowhere, back when if you were lucky you might find a corner shop open for an hour on Sunday morning with the nearest shop a half an hours walk away.
We used to get power cuts, snowed in etc.. so whilst my parents would cry at the idea of being preppers we spent a fair bit of time living like the rest of the world was shut and I picked up the habit of always being prepared for the lights to go out and the only food for a few days to be what was in the cupboard.
I was a big fan of The Wombles & The Good Life.

A month or so ago, I gave in & bought a pressure canner from the states as I've wanted one for years (they sent me 2 by mistake, so I'm now doubly prepared!) and was scouring the internet looking for uk recipies etc.. on using it & somehow ended up here.
Most of the information about using canners seemed to be on prepper sites in the states.

So, I was reading around the site as it looked interesting when I suddenly realised I have pretty much spent my whole life on the verge of being a prepper.
I've always carried a month worth of food and picked up odd skills which would, on reflection, be pretty useful if the SHTF.

Not really for a zombie apocalypse kind of situation, but for the hard times & big brother govt we pretty much have now.
I've been thinking a lot lately about how much more freedom to just live we had when I was a kid, compared to the way children today are growing up I suppose I'm prepping for everyday life and the (in my opinion likely) possibility that it gets worse.

I never want to have to rely on a food bank.

So, having realised who I am is best described as a prepper I'm now looking into it a bit more because it makes sense to me.
I don't see life in the uk improving any time soon.

I'm finding the whole where to start a bit overwhelming at present.

Never did find a good uk site about using a pressure canner though so if anyone knows of one please post me a link.

Welcome :P so much to be found on here, very useful indeed. Members are very helpful if you have questions and there is always someone who will help.

Out of interest how much did it cost with shipping to get the canner over from USA?

I got this presto one (23 quart)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291059050030

It was $98.99 for the canner - worked out £60.92 via paypal
Postage including customs etc.. was $41.41 - worked out £25.49

Total cost £86.41

Took about 10 days - 2 weeks to arrive.

Ball Blue Book of Preserving seems to be the one to go for. here is a us resource for canning http://nchfp.uga.edu/publications/publi ... _usda.html

Thanks for the link - have that one, but I've found most of the US recipies taste salty to the point they are almost inedible and I have a nightmare of a time trying to translate their cups, quarts etc... into uk measurements.
On my go to bread recipie, I had to use a quarter of the salt for it to taste good.

I'm hoping not to reinvent the wheel translating them all, then spend a year experimenting only to find a decent uk book (which actually tells you the shelf lives on stuff as well in my dreams) has been on sale all the time.

I buy the kilner jars for the canner in Dunhelm Mill by the way, cheapest place I've found them & they sell the 12 packs of replacement lids for £3.50 full price (or £1.75 when they do their sales) - they want £6 for the same pack of lids on Amazon

Have you looked in "The Range" I'm sure I saw them in there once, that is if you are near enough to one.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Thank you! That looks a bargain :D I may have to hint for my birthday I think, I already make jams etc so don't think eyebrows would vanish off the back of his head
