Rations

Post by Memphis »

Ive got myself a bunch of rations Ive not used on exercises, and those that others didnt use and were going to throw away, i think theyre quite valuable to keep hold of as they last a long time, and contain more than enough nutrition, even if lacking in the taste area a bit.

I have also been on many an exercise where there is a ridiculous amount of rations being thrown away, whole boxes full of tinned chocolate cake and bags and bags of porridge oats in one instance, its so wasteful and my question is does anyone have a system already in place, or found away of acquiring these unused rations? As from the inside its impossible to root through the skip and load up the transport home with days and days of rations...

Talk to your SQMS he should be able to transport back them to camp and you can collect them from stores later. Its what I do, and all I owe him is a beer or two at Squadrons dos and hes happy.

Beer or biscuits, theyll buy almost anything! Being a small unit we usually end up piggybacking exercises so its not our stores they come from unfortunately

Why are there so many unused supplies? Thought the armed forces had their systems pretty tightly controlled. Does make me a bit annoyed, when I hear complaints about lack of proper kit when there's stuff being given away like this. Sounds a bit like the NHS - plenty of money, just not being used correctly. Sorry, but I don't think this is how we should be prepping.

Probably as like most things its the way "it" is done..... Probably once booked out and the box opened they can't put them back into stock in the Stores due to hygiene reasons Suppose the soldiers out on exercise for example crapping in cling film them stuffing it in the same bergan as the food pack / pouches. or the box gets damp due to the weather.. Or simpally someone doesn't eat a meal or what ever........ And i assume most stores are computerised to stock control 50 ration packs get booked out 50 more auto ordered to refill the shelf...

Same applies in the NHS everything is pre packaged in terms of treatments......

Go in with a cut and they get a steri strip pack out.. in there is a little plastic bowl, pair of gloves, bit of gauze some saline some tissue paper and say 10 strips...... now i know about cross infection but 99% of time staff already have gloves on so they go in the bin, why mess about with a little plastic bowl and saline whats up with the sink hot running water and soap :?
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine

Theres not 'so many' unused, they get delivered in boxes of 10 so theres always a few more rat packs than exercising troops, plus you get people drop out due to injury, illness etc, so theres more spare. Some days you can get by on left overs from previous days so theres a few more, all of a sudden theres several boxes kicking about the SQs.

The alternative is that they deliberatly under order the amount of food needed but then you cant guarantee that you will have enough.

Its not ideal but it does work, usually :-P.
