What would you prep first?

Post by DustyDog »

If you had to start prepping from scratch again, what would you do first? What do you think is the most important thing to prep? I know we all have our own ideas as to what we think is the best thing to start with, i'm just wondering what my fellow preppers think. For me a good food/water supply is primary, whether you have a bug out place to go to or like me you plan to stay at home, when tshtf food/water is the first thing that non preppers are going to look for and shops will be emptied very quickly, so having well stocked larder is a must, what you think ppl???

Same as you to be honest, water, food, medicines, personal hygiene items, pet food, ways to cook food, safe storage of long term foods, lighting, heating. Last and by no means least treats! :D

I don't plan on bugging out.

Water, food & a means to defend it has been my primary focus initially.

As a relevant newcomer I don't see how bugging out is really that different, because once at your bug out location aren't you then just bugging in again ?

Unless your primary dwelling is untenable for whatever reason it's probably best to sit tight with your supplies & defend what you have in my opinion.

If I were starting again, I'd sit down and do a needs assessment. This would include things like:

How many of us, and what do we need?
What can we do?
What are the local threats and what would our response be? e.g. a buncefield-type bug out
What are the national threats and what would our response be?
What's the most common personal disaster and what do we need to do? (Hint: it's house fire in the UK, and redundancy)
What resources do we have?
What do we need to work on?
Where can we get help and info?
What skills do we need to build?

And so on....a couple of evenings' worth of work and thinking, and then developing a plan.

Instead, like a lot of people, I got obsessed with military-style BOBs, BOLs, and other kit, and wasted a bit of time and money on kit I'm not likely to use. Now I prefer to think of prepping as part of a self-sufficiency continuum that includes repairing things, growing my own food, managing finances as well as we can, as well as ensuring we have a certain amount of food, water, alternate energy and other resources available.

Start slow and simple.

Water is the first concern. Get the ability to filter water.

Second is food. Concentrate on what will keep you going. Like I have said before, when we lived in rural Alabama. We knew that many of our very poor neighbors had Kidney Beans and Rice much of the time. Because it is cheap and will keep you going.

Next.... I would stock up on vitamin supplements. I know some say they do no good, yet they can go a long way towards keeping you healthy.

Just my 2p worth.
I don't do politics or religion. Seen to many people die because of these.

I post to contribute so take as you see fit. My way is not the only way.

Cheers

Not got many vitamins to be truthful, I should add these to my stores. So multivitamins or singular types? Lots of vit c and how about berroca type things? :?:

J23, yes you are right, those are important things to think of, imho, prepping is not just about prepping for shtf scenarios but life in general. I myself have a daughter and home to think about, just as a lot of the preppers on this forum do, i am at this moment prepping my home for the winter, cutting and splitting logs for our wood burning stoves etc, however like a lot of ppl here i am also prepping for a possible shtf situation, that of which i personally believe will happen, i hope i am wrong and live a shtf free long life but as i have just said i think something will happen and i with a lot of my prepper friends hope that by prepping we will ride out what ever storm comes along.

not many people agree here or is interested in my point of view (more here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9910 ) as it is easier to dream of being Rambo who bugs out to neighbour's back garden rather than think rational about life, normal everyday boring life.

I agree with all you have said J23, prepping is about preparing for all eventualities, financial included, so your comments are welcome on this thread. I have some money saved away but i'm not on a large salary, so prepping for me is a slow process, looking at more self sufficiency with food and alternative power, to help stretch the pennies. Everyone has their own priorities and beliefs on what and how to prep, there are no rights or wrongs, it is up to the individual to decide.
