Like Featherstick, my first prep would be ME. I made so many mistakes rushing to be prepared that if I could turn back the clock, I would THINK more first.
Water was one thing that I didn't realise the importance of early on, it's everywhere isn't it? I bought a couple of dozen bottles of water from tescos and thought job done. Know better now.
I also hadn't realised how many skills we need to be really effective preppers, don't know that one life time is long enough to learn them all.
It doesn't matter if we make mistakes though, it only matters that we learn from them.

I have some money saved away but i'm not on a large salary, so prepping for me is a slow process, looking at more self sufficiency with food and alternative power, to help stretch the pennies. Everyone has their own priorities and beliefs on what and how to prep, there are no rights or wrongs, it is up to the individual to decide.

The german supermarkets have these at a reasonable price, just over a months supply per pot. This is an easy way to build up stocks without going 'how much? Flippin nora!'sfcfinchrs wrote:DustyDog wrote:I agree with all you have said J23, prepping is about preparing for all eventualities, financial included, so your comments are welcome on this thread. Do I take it that J23's post has been removed because for some reason I can't see any comments from him on financial prepping?DustyDog wrote:I agree with all you have said J23, prepping is about preparing for all eventualities, financial included, so your comments are welcome on this thread.
As it happens I tend to think that if I was starting over finance would be top of my concerns. Get some savings to one side allows greater freedom of action with preps of all kinds and gives one the ability to adapt to situations. With that sound base then one can start thinking about food and water and so on.

more about my financial ideas here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9910
say what you want. At the moment I am in financial hole, and need to use my savings just to meet ends as salary is not enough. But I DO HAVE SAVINGS. maybe it is boring and not as entertaining as learning to shoot bow, buying 4x4 just to drive around town or snaring rabbits but it is important to have savings. I would say at least 3 to 6 times your monthly spendings (mortgage/rent, bills, food, traveling costs etc) as emergency fund in easly accessible form, for example bank ISA even if it is bad profit it is easly accessible in normal times, without it if something wrong happens (illness, broken leg, loosing job) you can still cope. IMO it is stupidity to buy expensive gear "just in case shtf" if you have no savings for normal life or to pay for it with credit card.
Just my idea of prepping - hopefully it won't be deleted this time
my aim is to get to 5k of emergency fund which should cover all our expenses for 3-4 months in case we both lose jobs or 8-9 months maybe more if one of us loses job as if needed we can live for 1.3k for a month or even less. begging for benefits would be probably last thing I would go for and as long as I could cope for I would cope for on my own

Re: What would you prep first?
I would run the risk of having no preps at all :0 and start with financial prepping first, with excess money I would find life so much easier.
Since I started prepping I have spent hundreds each year on the basics, I have also made some big decisions which I regret.
I would love to be in a more rural position with a smaller more economical house and more land, if I knew what I know now I would be in the countryside and living a much less stressful life. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

As you had both been warned already, I would of been within my rights to of banned you both.
I was feeling generous then. Not any more.

Actually; it was removed due to your argumentative manner with another member.J23 wrote:It was removed due to fact I wrote the truth

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
Re: What would you prep first?
if that were true all we'd need to prep is money post SHTF some emergency money would be useful, for when the ATM's don't work, but that will be a short time, after which barter will be the way to go, money will be useless, you cant eat money, good for lighting a fire but that's about it.Stasher wrote:

Re: What would you prep first?
To get back to the question...a good one when I look at the huge choice out there.
I think we need to be all-inclusive right from the start...and it is hard to start at all when on a reduced income.
My approach is still the weekly box approach with enough to help through one week at a time. I think it will be the best way to deal with using it and also with rotation. This is mostly for food but with other things added (toothpaste, soap etc). 'Wilco' do a good range of plastic containers at a sensible price.
There are exceptions to this rule. Logs come in a pile for basic heating and cooking and are stored outside. Water is mostly in large containers in the shed (which reminds me it needs to be changed and the containers scrubbed out). Some bottled water is in the house. Stored milk is of the dried and tinned variety but we have a farmer on the doorstep and in times of trouble he will have to sell his milk locally (barter comes into play)
Making sure that tools etc are replaced and looked after comes high on my list. These might be hard to find when others start finding they need them and replacements will be difficult.
Medication and other first aid is high on the list too as doctors will be thin on the ground.
