Basic bug out kit

Post by dannytsg »

Okay so you are allowed 5 items in the most basic of bug out bags. This bag is one which must see you through for most bug out scenarios and is not specific. Bear in mind you will already be carrying your everyday items on your person. What are yours and why?

1) DPM Basha/Tarp - Provides overhead shelter/cover for adverse weather
2) Machete which has fire steel/cotton wool balls in the handle - to chop wood, start fire and build further shelter
3) 30m of pararcord - has many many uses too many to mention
4) £100 cash - can be used to acquire food and possibley shelter
5) Dynamo flash light - no batteries required so sustainable light when required

Some form of water purfication is always a minium essential, if your in the wild or post-shtf then no power = no safe water, as electricity is required to purify and pump clean water, and to purify an pump waste. Without power waste and fresh water sources will soon mix.

Treat EVERY source of water as contaminated, it "looks" safe is water that will at minium make you sick and can KILL.

Can be as simple solution as some steri-tablets and a boiling flask. Or a lifestraw, berky, etc..
Safe water purfication can not be understated, you cannot carry any form of long term supply so you can only gather and purify.

Happy prepping. :D
Hope for the best, prep for the worst and keep it need to know.

To be a consistent winner means preparing not just one day, one month or even one year - but for a lifetime.

If I've already got my EDC?

Pot (stainless steel, lidded)
Sleeping bag (probably down)
Tent (My Karrimor 2 man tunnel, although a dome can be put up inside..... Might swap )
Axe (a Kentish most likely)
More cash (notes this time as I've already got a load of change)

Just a thought - would it be possible to form a large pouch with a corner of the tarp to use as a water container and tie it off with paracord?

My brain's wandering - must be getting late.

Interesting one this. I read years back about what a person in the Third World values. And what we might call a 'bug out kit'. I am rather minimalist in my outlook to kit, and as I sit here I do not have my pockets full of kit. So if I had to run...
1. Blanket, or similar
2.plastic tarpaulin
3.Knife or machete or other sharp pointy thing
4.water container.
5. Cooking vessel.

Seeing as how we would be allowed the contents of pockets I would add some cordage and a fag lighter.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

My main thinking behind this was what are the minimal 5 things each of us would think we needed as essentials for a bug out kit.

Personally I really think all I need is a shelter, a ways to make fire and a tool to help cut wood, skin animals etc with my thinking being along the lines of:

3 minutes without air
3 hours without shelter - DPM basha to ensure a water free area to stay under
3 days without water - capability to Boil water by starting a fire
3 weeks without food - machete to cut wood, make traps and catch food.

The rest of the things I "need" are generally knowledge based as opposed to a physical item.

My next plan is to try and test my own choice by using that and only that firstly on a wild camp ice righter and then maybe a weekend.

If I'm bugging out in the UK, my BOB will have:

Wallet including credit cards
Change of clothes for a couple of days
Vital documents - passports, insurance details, house deeds, mortgage details, photographed inventory of the house, CV - scanned and stored on a thumb drive
Computer External drive with recent backup
Snacks

The most common cause of bug-out in the UK is house fire and you'll need to be able to rebuild your life and still go to work whilst in a hotel room or sleeping on a relative's floor. A basha and a machete won't be much help with that.

well said, Add a toothbrush or two and im with you 100%, now I need to re-evaluate my bug out kit

I think you're confusing bugging out with evacuating, its easily done as they have similar goals and actions, the difference really is context.

Opinions vary.
