Welcome. It would be nice if you could expand a little perhaps on what type of prepping interests you. Thanks.

Thanks for the welcome :)
With regards what to be prepping for, I’m following more history for clues. For me, that includes:
*Riots, where you wont want to be on the streets in any big towns or cities
*Social/Financial breakdown, potentially resulting in a collapse. With the way the world and local news seems to be going, this isn’t out of the realm of possibility and this would be the biggest problem to face.
*Ebola is on the radar, however it can be treated similar to riots, where as long as you’re not out on the streets in the general population, you’ll likely be ok when taking simple precautions

More locally, power cuts are a hindrance but not a big deal as they generally don’t last more than 2+ hours. The roads into and out of village have been cut off in winter before from snow but that was only 3-4 days from memory a good while back. With these being more minor, they don’t present too many problems.

The biggest problem I seem to be facing is storage for supplies/items, having a 3 bedroom dwelling all on ground floor with minimal loft space

At the moment my biggest interest is alternative energy solutions. At the moment we’re on the electric grid with gas used only for central heating. We’ve dabbled with simple solar systems before, having 2 panels, a controller, battery etc. I’ve been looking more recently into gasifiers, I found an interesting document from the US Department Of Energy that outlines how they work and how a member of the public could build one with a few tools. It’s a bit detailed with 156 pages but if anyone is interested, I’ll try and find a link

The biggest thing that surprised me was I didn’t know communities like this existed, online or otherwise. It was by accident I came across a US forum, that got me wondering if a UK forum existed, got reading on here and joined up Nice to know there's others that think “What if”

Hi Fozzie, welcome to the forum, great 2nd post there!

If you can find that gasifier link, I'd love to see it. I found a few things about making biogas after I saw one of Kevin McCloud's programmes, of all things ... I don't think they're the same, are they ...

Anyway, you're right, the UK prepping scene is different from the US; for example, when they say EveryDayCarry, they mean what gun, what armaments. We're more likely to mean what torch, how many spare pairs of socks, how much water, that sort of thing

Hi Arzosah,
Biogas is slightly different, in short, Biogas is playing with poo, breaking it down and using the methane as a fuel to burn. To me, it would only be effective if under pressure and to manage this, you would need to compress and store it until you opened the tap. Nice idea but it's a bit involved for my plans.

US DoE: http://www.nrel.gov/docs/legosti/old/3022.pdf Chapter 11 might be of special interest.

I've spent a little time in the US and can understand how their ideas are a little different to what we're able to do in the UK. Some of their forums do have some unique posters that define "tin foil hat"

Hi and welcome. I'm in the south as well but then its a big place.

I have been on a few US sites, they are a bit more intense than the UK ones.
