I know this is an old thread but it is worth mentioning this to avoid any confusion on what you're buying.
The modern Coal Tar Soap that can bought in the orange packs from many outlets is not the original formulation. Recent rulings have stopped the original production of this as Coal Tar is deemed to be Carcinogenic. What you get now is the same soap as all the others but with a Coal Tar scent.
If you really do want to experience the cleanliness that proper Coal Tar soap gives you, my advice is to buy some Pine Tar soap. This stuff is not banned and is a wonderful product to use. It leaves the odd brown stain in the soap dish but the astringency (tight feeling) and cleanliness that it provides is second to none!
I doubt if you'll find Pine Tar in the shops. A craft fair perhaps but i've always bought mine from eBay. It's not exactly cheap but you do get a huge block so it's not too bad overall.

Also another very long lasting soap brand is Loccitane, tripple milled and gorgeous smells, a bar can last a few months and they are creamy enough to shave with (men and women!!) Worth the money they cost and they don't leave a sticky mess in the dish.
