Survival Kit - for Wilderness and Countryside

Post by Trawlerman »

I posted a topic a few days ago about the need for having a pocket Survival Kit.

Try as I may I couldn't see the need for of the items in an urban environment. Who needs a firestarter on a sub-urban housing estate, or a fishing kit for that matter?

So I came to the conclusion that whilst this kit would come in very useful in the wilderness or out in the countryside I would also need an Urban EDC kit tailored for inner-city use.

Right now I have the wilderness Survival Kit sorted as per a great deal i found on eBay a couple of days ago. The Urban EDC will come when i've thought on it some more

1 x Tobacco tin can be used as a mess tin or the lid can be used for signalling.
1 x Credit card multitool
2 x Pieces of water resistant paper for note taking or additional tinder.
4 x Waterproof plasters of varying sizes.
4 x Butterfly sutures to close wounds, 2 small and 2 large.
1 x Sterile PremierPore adhesive dressing. (Latex Free)
2 x PDI Alcohol prep pad wipes.
4 x Water Purification tablets.
1 x Cotton ball easily ignitable tinder
1 x Bundle of Jute twine for tinder
1 x 2 Treated pieces of Amadou.
1 x 10 pieces of char cloth - used like you would the amadou, ignites incredibly easily
1 x Ballpoint pen, a lot of survival kits will contain pencils, but I find a pen much more functional! Especially for every day out door use.
1 x Razor Blade, A sharp edge for cutting.
1 x Candle, relighting for use in windy conditions
1 x Zip Lock bag. Waterproofing or water carrying.
1 x 1.5 meters of brass wire for rabbit snares
1 x Whistle in military green.
1 x Fishing Kit including, 3 hooks of various sizes, 3 lures, 2 weights and 25 ft of line.
1 x Match Kit with striker, 5 waterproof matches.
1 x Sewing Kit includes 3 different colour threads, 3 safety pins, 2 buttons.
1 x Button Compass
1 x ferro flint rod and striker, create that spark to get your fire going
1 x Length of PVC tape, endlessly useful! Great for repairing kit,
1 x Length of Transpore medical tape, can be used for extra sutures or taping gauze or fabric to wounds to stem bleeding.
1 x Wire Saw.
1 x Heat sealable aluminium bag.

The PVC Tape can be used to keep the tin secure. That is to say wrap the tape round the tin lid to secure it to the tin.

It was a complete kit from eBay. £11 for the lot. It would have cost me more than to include the bits I didn't have on hand such as the button compass, firesteel, wire saw etc.

Should have said that I also got two decent sized pieces of fatwood and other bits of fire tinder thrown in as well.

It was from this guy ............... http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/the_survivalist_gear

Well if you need to light a fire in a sub-urban housing estate you will , if youve got nothing else , and fishing kit , well look outside the box , thin fishing line and a empty can and youve got a early warning alarm , fishing line on a stick holding a box up easy trap , communication cord between two people .

Just because you are in a certain area doesnt say that in a few days you wont be in a totally different environment

You make some good points Poppiesdad. I think I need to be looking outside the box for other uses for my kit apart from the obvious ones.
I do intend making an Urban EDC tin to supplement this one as well.
