FOZZIE - regarding firearms, I would say though if you feel this is something you want to know about visit a UK club, the amount of knowledge they have there, and everyone want to show off what they own, and know....

It also gives you a more realistic approach to the British aspect of guns, contrary to the daily mail, they aren't that easy to get hold of and you sign your life away to get one legally.

Eg you manage to get an FAC in the UK and you are a known friend of someone that has just been in trouble ( be it a fight or other violent activity), you could get your license taken off you and banned for life... And that is by proxy, you may have nothing to do with their actions.

Many thanks for all the suggestions. A trip to a shooting range is also on the list of things to do.

Having been a member of my local Smallbore club with no fullbore rifle club around, I'm quite aware :)
Even clubs don't have access to handguns (excluding air pistols and blackpowder pistols which are different things entirely) so having the opportunity to shoot one as member of the public in the US, I felt was worth mentioning as it's not exactly advertised widely over here.
