Re: Child safe home security
That sounds like circumstances have changed for the worse, sorry to hear it ... as for security suggestions, hmmm:
- a 'beware of the dog' sign? No dog, just the sign?
- window locks. Are they portable, I quite understand the thing of not improving the landlord's property
- a security light that comes on with movement? They have to be mounted, so they must be portable, and you can take it with you.
- the Fire Brigade often gives freebies to people, smoke alarms etc.
- is the landlord fulfilling all his/her obligations as a landlord?
- if its draughty, what about that expanding foam as a quick sealant? Or even rags, cut very thin, if its the gap between the floorboards and the skirting board?
- for the windows, what about that window film, like a heavier version of clingfilm?
- is the letterbox draughty? New ones, with good flaps both sides and a set of brushes inside, can cost about £12, and as long as you don't have to cut into the door, you could just put the old one back when you leave and take yours with you ...
Can't think of anything else right now, if I do I'll pop back. Best of luck.

Sorry to hear you had to move , as said buy a dog sign , and a big water bowl ,
Look around in the surplus shops for a ex police hi viz , they usually have the police sign removed but folded right would look the part along with a pair of high boots by the front door,
Simple things like door wedges , screwed blocks, bolts to reinforce doors .
If it's that bad an area , don't waste your time with an alarm , in Glasgow they throw a brick through the window , and if the light go on you run , if it stays dark ,in you go . Noise doesn't hurt you .

I am also sorry for you having to move to a location that isn't ideal, I think some of the suggestions are good, I would offer also a Video surveillance sign and a dummy camera, you can get them quite cheap on Amazon. The dog sign is okay but most intruders will case the joint first, if they don’t see a dog then chances are no dog. Look around the normal entry points of the house, backdoor, ground floor windows, is there something you could put down that would make a noise. i.e. bubble wrap in a frame. The windows pose a different problem, if you don’t want to put locks on them (not your house) then non adhesive film (amazon) is a good idea, it will make the glass spider shatter and is harder to break through. Also a rape alarm, doesn’t matter if you are male or female always a good thing to have at hand.

use a light timer in the bedroom and bathroom, make it look like theres someone at home.
also leave a small radio playing and get some portable motion detector alarms there cheap enough,
the clingfilm for the windows is a very good idea.
best of luck stay safe

Re: Child safe home security
Rape alarms are a good idea!! Could they be rigged to fit on the doors somehow so that if opened during the night they somehow pull the pin?? They can be deafening. Also you could fit window locks that you take with you when you leave quite cheaply. Sliding doors?? A length of wood fitted into the sliding track will stop them being opened. Good locks on all external doors are a must and worth paying out for. I agree with movement sensitive lights also and maybe a notice saying "smile you're on CCTV" wouldn't go amiss.

Windowboxes and film can make windows more secure.
Getting to know you neighbours if this is possible or desirable.
Couple of gurt big bolts fitted to doors.
Entry chain and spyhole - cheap and easy to fit, and signal to passers-by
Neighbourhood watch sticker
Get to know your local Neighbourhood Policing Team, they are often happy to talk to residents.

Re: Child safe home security
contact the local neighbourhood police and ask them for advise. Buy some rose hedging bushes to plant under windows those thorns are lethal and they don't look like home security. Teach the children rounder's or baseball
