Bulk Meat

Post by itsybitsy »

I am looking to buy some meat in bulk. I know that a lot of the supermarket suppliers have outlets where they sell stuff dirt cheap. Does anyone know of any in Yorkshire? Or any good wholesale/bulk meat companies? I have found an online shop called Underwoods which has stores in Rotherham/Sheffield, and also an online shop. I have found minced beef priced at £9.20 for 2kg, which is pretty inexpensive! However, I also wanted to get other items such as meatballs and they don't sell them there.

Yes, I could make my own, but if I can buy them ready done that's easier for me.

This is a good blog, for anyone that's interested. http://www.frugalqueen.co.uk/2013/08/ho ... chers.html

Know any yokal farmers who have a pig farm? We used to get 1/2 A pig every now and then but he's stopped trading....

The car boot at Cave often has the large butchers van and the meat is very good and reasonable

Trying to think of the name if that farmers shop neat Beverly but it escapes me at the moment

Do they still do the farmers market at humber bridge car park?

I've found asking them for a bulk price often sees a reduction in price

Go and see a local Butcher. Tell him what you want, get a price. Simples. We get folks haggling all the time.

Oh yes, I nearly forgot. If you go to a Sunday market or similar, the butchers seem to be knocking it out cheap. The beef is Brazilian, pork Spanish/Dutch/Belgian, chicken is Dutch/Polish and the lamb is Aussie/New Zealand or Uraguay. Just a heads-up.

You'd be better off at Iceland or Tesco!

To be honest I use Tesco/Asda/Iceland for bog standard stuff like mince and pork then use a good local butcher for the 'better' cuts of meat.

I do recommend http://www.gowersaltmarshlamb.co.uk/ their lamb is lovely.

We have two or three 'mobile' butchers local to us at markets but whilst the meat can be cheap the price is often reflected in the quality.

From experience is cheaper to buy nz lamb in the UK than it is to buy it in nz unless it comes direct from the farm as a home kill!

Edit just a though, if you are buying meat in bulk if you are freezing do you have a method to keep the freezer(s) running if the power is out for long enough there is a danger of defrosting?
