The long term vision

Surely real prepping is for the major events? Riding out the smaller events are just exercises to show you where you need more work. You need to prepare for the many things which can go wrong in this fragile world.
Prepping is really just thinking ahead and planning for events which could disrupt your everyday life. What events you prep for is down to you as an individual.

We're all here to be better prepared for what we deem are more probable threats that we can actually do something about.

You're preaching to the converted, hence why you won't find any big lists of our inventories, or pictures of peoples stores.

you have to remember where most of our power comes from though, about what 70% of our power comes from coal and gas? which nearly all of which is imported? So just saying, in a worst case scenario, the country would have roughly 25-30%? 15% of that coming from nuclear and re-newable?

fair point about where the power would go, I feel to prepare for the worst is the best option, then if anything smaller happens your covered. I'm working on a home made generator, i've been speaking to some of our US-counter parts about it and they've suggested a generator which will run on more than one fuel...

...Why not think in a different way ? Why not work on how you'd manage WITHOUT a genny ? Anything like that needs power & makes noise...

I've already looked at the short term, getting by with no power and such, but i'm forever the optimist and looking into the longer term, if TSHTF, i'm aiming to be able to build a normality base within my collective. Looking at how some humans respond to the major events, when in the right location (With very high walls) i'd like to try and get life back to normal or as much as possible! lol

Hi bmp
It sounds like you have thought about this a fair bit, so I’m interested in a few points which has always concerned me and to which I haven’t yet come up with an answer :?

How would pick the people to join you in your long term BOL?
How would you communicated that to them
And when is it time to move to the BOL

I do think about the possibilities alot your right, and at times it has caused alot of friction, but being prepared is what were all here to learn and share.

Realistically when picking your team you should be looking at usefullness and effectiveness. However remember who your trying to save. for example i am lucky in the fact, in my immediate family i have a teacher, a nurse, a fabricator welder and a mechanic.

Best way to do it is think about what skills you need, and who you know that have the required skills. Also try and make your group people with similar personalities. Recruiting the wrong people will cause friction and will effectively destroy your chances of survival. For example, a devout christian and a devout muslim may cause problems down the road (THERE IS NO RELIGIOUS INSULT OR ANYTHING INTENDED).

As for recruiting them, that is a completey unique thing for you to discover, it may be a conversation with a mate in the pub, to meeting people online (NEVER MEET WITHOUT THOROUGH CONVERSE THROUGH EMAILS, CAMS CAN BE ESSENTIAL) Try not to give to much away to people who you may not trust, if TSHTF, they may not be the most welcome guests.

As for when to leave, well that i'm afraid i cant help you with, it is completely up to you and your clan. Just remember one thing, when it all does go to pot there will be a mass migration out of urban areas and an exodus to rural areas, (which will undoubtabley get overrun) the phrase Get Out Of Dodge somes it up really, you need to get out before this happens, or it may be impossible to reach your BOL, especailly before someone else gets there first!

This is the major prepping flaw in the UK and other small isolated countries!

Think long and hard about your BOL.

If you move into a poor area, thinking they'd all move on to brighter prospects, think of all the chavs, pikeys and the rest of the 'great un-washed' may decide to stay and establish their own 'gang rule'.

Any move to a nicer, posher, richer area would be one of the target areas by the gangs and also normal people looking for better things (these will also be the places which undoubtedly still have power till the end)

rural areas will quickly be over run by people looking for food and water, as well as armed farmers trying to portect their crops!

SO, where do we go? i hear you cry?!?! Well... Honestly, depending on where you live will be the deciding factor...

If you live in the far north, hit the mountains, anywhere south of that unfortunatley it'll be fair game and survival of the fittest...

hence my doomy predictions, there is no hiding realistically, there'll be a lot of hungry mouths out there!
