It's more to get round the legal requirement to inform the authorities of you fuel stocks , as storing in a vehicle tank is classed as different to storing in jerry cans . I agree not the most practical method in some respects . As to a sorn vehicle attracting the wrong attention then it's not difficult to keep it clean on the outside and propped up to make it look un laden .

as for rotating fuel , all it takes is a small tap put into the fuel feed line .

You wont be able to tell a vehicle is SORN anymore as paper tax discs are slowly disappearing from windscreens, a good car cover should be used also and then you could store other items inside too.
