Hi. It takes ten posts to clear moderators approvals. It is a little filtering system we use to weed out unsuitable members. If you could leave the 'new member' section and get out onto the forum you will start making your ten posts. This area does not count.
Thanks.

For solar chargers, I have a Freeloader Pico which works quite well for me (Samsung Galaxy S5). You can see them at http://www.solartechnology.co.uk/solar-chargers
I can't promise it will work for a daily charge (especially in the winter it takes a couple of days to get up to capacity) but I keep it around just in case the power goes out and I need a boost. You can charge it from a PC via USB and leave it on the windowsill to keep topped up. I think I read somewhere that some tints on the glass in modern windows can effect the efficiency of the charge via the solar panel, so may be worth bearing that in mind too. Maplins have them for about a tenner, some are £15 - £20 on ebay so beware!
They also do some bigger versions and a solar AA battery charger.
Waiting for the post to be approved is just for new members, I think for the first 5 posts or something. I reckon you might get 3 hours per can, but that probably does depend on the brand and is only based on my vague memory!
Whereabouts in the country are you, if you don't mind me asking?

Re: prepping for being snowed in
I'd work on about a can of gas a day from personal experience camping but only a bit of experimentation based on your useage can give you a true ideakatilea wrote:The flame free box looks interesting but I'd definitely need to boil water to tea, cup-a soups, for hot water bottles, my dogs meals etc so that wouldn't solve the problem.
I watched on YouTube a cartridge been put in one of those small bistro cookers and reckon I could manage that. As no gas can leak out if it takes a few attempts to get it in, it seems safe enough.
I'm finding it quite frustrating that I can't answer immediately under the post I want to and my reply is not coming up until later as every post has to be be approved.. is this just for new members and will end soon? otherwise I can't see me staying as the interruption to flow of conversation is very annoying!
Thanks to everyone who answered it would take too long to quote and reply to everyone especially as posts aren't going up immediately in response, but everyone has been most helpful!
Can I just ask how long do the cans last? in regard to cooking time?.. I saw one cooker came with 8 cans on Amazon but the one in the link they have to be bought seperately and come in a 4 pack. I've no idea whether 4 would be enough to last a day, a couple of days?
Thanks
Kati

Is it possible for you to go out and do a fact finding mission to the supermarket that you normally order on line with so that you can find out which foods have the longest life on them. Lots of food have a two year life span and some just last forever peanut butter and honey being two of them cuppa soups normally have a good life span on them as well and john west tuna salads that come in foil containers(will be in the same place as tined fish) normally have a two year life span on them, have a look in your cupboards and see what the dates on your food say now those that have long dates on order again. Never having ordered on line do they give best before dates on the products. With the stuff that has long use by dates on write to the manufactures, explain your problems and praise them this will do to things one they will send you a voucher for the product and two it will encourage them to make more long lasting food.
