Bike inner tubes

Post by CynicalSurvival »

I seem to remember a while ago reading about ppl using bits of bike inner tubes as part of edc or survival tins as extra tough rubber bands. I have a couple of questions -

- What are they used/useful for?
- Can you use the tubes from a really old bike?

Ta! :D

I have a few strips in my fire kit, perfect for lighting fires, use as a firelighter, they burn well, even when wet.

Super strong rubber bands, will burn when wet (because they are basically solid oil), and in Zimbabwe the other week I saw them being used in long strips to patch up leaky hosepipe.

You can use old ones, but if they have perished you will know as soon as you stretch one, before i throw an inner tube away i always cut a band out and try it, if it works i tend to cut some.

Dont just cut them straight across either, cut diaganal ones to make them bigger, i also use it on wooden handles of hammers and axes, to take some of the vibration out of using them.
