Hello From The South West
Hello From The South West
Hi, been reading the forums for a while but just got around to registering. I live in a city with no realistic way of bugging out, so my preps are focused on bugging in and surviving for a month - my view is, if anything serious lasts more than a month, I'll probably have more to worry about than food! Have enough water and basic food supplies, working on improving the food situation over time. Topic of most interest to me at the moment is how to make a terraced house more secure, plus how to heat a house with no gas or leccy!

hi and welcome
there are to many factors and situations to give you a correct answer (how many people bugging in ? how many windows doors to secure at short notice who lives nearby who could help ).
As for heating and lighting maybe think about oil lamps /candles maybe a gas camping stove if you don,t have a open fireplace just basic stuff really.

Hi Notadog and welcome to the forum. I'm afraid you're in the same boat as the rest of who live on this isle, it is far too small to find somewhere that is isolated enough to stay off the grid. I've thought a lot about defence and come to the conclusion that I would not be able to fend off marauding gangs who were looting due to this country's laws on protecting your property. Mind you, even if you had the hardware to deter someone from robbing you in your home, how do you stop someone who has taken the hump at you having the temerity to defend yourself, firebombing your property? Even if I had a gun, the criminal gangs would have more people and therefore more firepower. The riots in London a few years ago proved that some people will turn feral at the earliest opportunity. I do agree that people in the very rural areas of the UK will have a better chance of surviving as mobility will become an issue as fuel supplies dwindle. That will be the upside, the downside is that their isolation will be their downfall as once their supplies ran out, it would be hard to replenish them.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

We have a fireplace with a gas fire in it, which I want to remove. Was looking at getting one of those Ruby paraffin heaters, but there seems to be some disagreement on whether paraffin can be stored long-term. Might just look at making one of those tea-light heaters, out of a flower pot.Nicks19 wrote:hi and welcome

I've got a lovely three-season sleeping bag which has kept me warm when camping at freezing temperatures, but you'd need warmth during the day. I do have camping stoves, but would want to improve ventilation before trying to use one as a heater, even with a CO alarm in the room. I even have a wood gas stove (although not much fuel to run on it), not sure how well that would fare in a fireplace, but have been looking into making my own ethanol gel, as it's safer than using liquid ethanol.
