Tough (& waterprrof) USB 3 ThumbDrive
Re: Tough (& waterprrof) USB 3 ThumbDrive
If a min SD card did survive a EMP, great! next question what would you read it on?
Re: Tough (& waterprrof) USB 3 ThumbDrive
No, modern memory cards / USB sticks are inherently vulnerable to EMPs becuase (a) the EMP pulse can / will damage the circuitry, and (b) modern memory circuits are incredibly dense and therefore more susceptible to electrical disruption.digi wrote:would an SD card survive an EMP ? maybe something a little larger, but fully encased could be a better bet than something smaller?
Appropriately protected and grounded, they should be fine, as would most other electrical devices.
Optical storage (CDs, DVDs, BRDs) are not susceptible to EMP.

Re: Tough (& waterprrof) USB 3 ThumbDrive
The reason i'm looking at USB rather then other formats of media is 2 fold one, if we look at my case and what i worry about (the Thames flooding) then when people were put together in some kind of emergency shelter i suspect that USB would be more avaliable then other kinds of media, I do have a 128GB micro SD card in the phone and that has copies on as well but sod getting that out in the middle of the night or anything like that, Bosworth has hit the nail on the head with his comment.
The GorillaDrive looks intresting but i will have to check if it does USB3, reason USB3 is faster transfer rates, of course this depends on them having USB3 systems.
Silicon Power looks nice but some unhappy reviews i will have to look more into why these Silicon power people are.

Please bear in mind i am prepping for the River Thames to flood and how i can get to safe ground, I'm not worried about the end of the world..... I'll die with the other Minions.
I can't trust Govt or local Council to help me so i have to help myself.

This is one aspect of prepping i've never really gotten around too (putting documents onto USB) but one i should really put some thought into. For the price of a USB stick you can't not do it.
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, and having a look at some water/dust/shock proof USB's when i get in later today.
Good thread that's given me a kick up the rear.

I wouldn't worry about usb3. For a start most Gov dept are way behind computer wise and secondly your showing documents, if it was movies your copying over I'd say yes, but for documents the file sizes are small anyway.Alloneword wrote:The reason i'm looking at USB rather then other formats of media is 2 fold one, if we look at my case and what i worry about (the Thames flooding) then when people were put together in some kind of emergency shelter i suspect that USB would be more avaliable then other kinds of media, I do have a 128GB micro SD card in the phone and that has copies on as well but sod getting that out in the middle of the night or anything like that, Bosworth has hit the nail on the head with his comment.

To be honest it's not just Govt that intrests me but i do have a fair few GB's of data to move and in my case it could be in a hurry so USB3 speeds would make a difference to me and on the laptop as well.sniper 55 wrote:I wouldn't worry about usb3. As for what i'm taking, so will be hard copies and this and others will be going on USB stick.
This is what has been printed and kept in waterproof document holder:
Electricy bill
Paperwork for bike *MOT/Receipt/receipt for transfer of funds for buying it/HPI check/Log Book/Insurance Cert
Contract for storage units
RAC Membership card
Driving Licence (paper part as well, i know it's not needed)
NHS Medical Card
Old passports (nothing current)
Wife's Passport
Mine and wife's birth cert's
Marrage Cert
Wifes old divorce papers
Barclaycard/Mastercard Statement
BT Bill (Showing Acc Number)
Bank account info giving sort code/acc number etc
Santander Account Info
Contracts for Wife's work
Water rates account info
Tenancy agreement (Social Housing)
TV Licence number
Insurance for household contents
So all the above stuff has been printed out in hard copy to keep at hand if needed, also on the thumb drive will be all this plus past copies of things, so i have also scanned in ALL old paperwork relating to the bike that being money spent by previous owners/old MOT etc, done this as if i lost all originals it would still give me history for the bike. Also i always keep 5 years of any and all banking transactions so that is old copies of statements etc, I have also scanned receipts for high ticket items.
Then on top of that i have a few hundred pictures of an old m8 who is no longer with us, and all the usual letters and emails etc.
So that is what i have done so far it's not 100% complete but i reckon about 85% done, off course every one will have there own list, same of you may be lucky and be able to store of site at family or frinds house but i don't trust anyone with this stuff, and no i won't store it anywhere in the cloud.

TBH I have not thought of doing this...............
Not entirely sure why you would do it tho, Alloneword can you tell me what sort of scenarios you see this being useful (ie why you would need these docs because of flooding ?), as I guess I am stuck in " I only need my zombie knife" situations............?????
Re: Tough (& waterprrof) USB 3 ThumbDrive
I'm not a fan of massive memory sticks as you tend not to carry them. I use a 64GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade, which lives in the zip up coin part of my wallet. Being that I always have my wallet and keys with me, I know I've always got a back up of all my important documents.
I know some people carry around a massive chain of keys with everything but the Kitchen sink attached but I like things to fit in my jeans pockets.
64GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade are cheap and I've never had an issue with any SanDisk product and I've literally ordered thousands of memory sticks for customers.

Re: Tough (& waterprrof) USB 3 ThumbDrive
Out of curiosity, do any of you guys who have USB sticks use any encryption/security on them?
It's just occured to me as i'm thinking about doing this the last thing i'd want is to misplace the drive and someone have access to everything.
